Microsoft has detailed a new Xbox console update that is expected to introduce some changes to how wishlist notifications and game patches work. The company's latest update has already started rolling out to Xbox console users in late September 2024.
Microsoft typically updates its home consoles about once a month. Before today, its last major release was in late August 2024, when the company introduced new installation options for Xbox games and support for watching Discord broadcasts, among other new features.
Xbox Consoles Can Now Pre-Download Game Updates
Microsoft has now followed up that release with a new operating system update labeled version 10.0.26100.2239, which debuted on Wednesday, September 25. One of the two big new features included in this patch is support for pre-downloading Xbox game updates. This particular addition won’t come as a surprise to everyone, as Microsoft has been testing it since mid-May 2024, when it first released its experimental build to members of the Xbox Insider program.
How to Pre-Download Game Updates on Xbox Consoles
To use the new feature, you need to go to the My games and apps menu, then select Manage and Updates. Here, the console will display all the Xbox game updates that can be downloaded in advance. As expected, pre-downloads will not work by themselves, but are simply something that developers can choose to implement. Some of the Xbox games that already support them include Minecraft, Sea of Thievesand the Pokemon rival Box BeastsMicrosoft has promised that more and more titles will adopt the pre-release update model in the near future.
Xbox console wishlist notifications are getting smarter
The second new feature introduced in the September 2024 update changes the way notifications work on Microsoft consoles. Specifically, games that are on your Wishlist will now appear in notifications whenever they are released, added to your Xbox Game Pass library, or featured in any Free Play Days promotions. This behavior will be enabled by default on the latest version of the Xbox operating system, but can also be disabled in your Wishlist notification settings.
Microsoft also announced other changes to its gaming ecosystem today, including the decision to shut down the Xbox Game Pass mobile app. Its functionality will soon be integrated into the Xbox app in an effort to provide a more streamlined and unified user experience. The change itself is scheduled to roll out in November 2024. Microsoft is expected to release at least one more Xbox console update by then.
