Key points
- Jac Schaeffer is crucial to any Scarlet Witch project thanks to her success with WandaVision and Agatha All Along.
- Schaeffer understands Wanda's character and potential, making her essential to any future film or series about the sorceress.
- Marvel Studios can't afford to continue Scarlet Witch's story without Schaeffer's involvement in some way.
The return of Wanda Maximoff to Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) seems imminent, with Kevin Feige hinting that it's just a matter of when and how. Elizabeth Olsen is likely to return in a standalone Scarlet Witch movie, or perhaps a second season WandaVision. But whatever the project, a Marvel Studios writer/producer should be involved, ideally in a lead role.
In his last appearance in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of MadnessWanda sacrifices herself to destroy Mount Wundagore and destroy every copy of the Darkhold in the multiverse. Also Agata always suggests that Wanda is gone forever. But in the MCU no one is ever truly “dead”, especially with the multiverse still in play. So, assuming a “Scarlet Witch will return” title card has appeared, who should take the reins of her next project? The answer lies in looking back at someone who led both teams WandaVision AND Agata always: Jac Schaeffer.

With four episodes left of the first season of Disney Plus' WandaVision, showrunner Jac Schaeffer was asked about the possibility of a second season.
Who should oversee all Scarlet Witch projects from now on?
Marvel Studios need look no further than Jac Schaeffer for any upcoming project involving Scarlet Witch. As creator of WandaVision AND Agata alwaysSchaeffer has proven his mettle and the universal success of both shows is proof of his talent. Her presence is crucial to any future film or series featuring the sorceress or related characters. In fact, if a standalone Scarlet Witch movie is in the works, there's a strong case for Schaeffer to take on the role of director.
While Wanda has been a significant presence in the franchise since her debut in Avengers: Age of Ultronhis story arc has probably peaked WandaVisionlargely thanks to Schaeffer and his team of writers. As writer and showrunner, she clearly understood the character and its potential. Schaeffer also excelled at adding other comic book-related characters to the mix, such as Agatha Harkness, to the point that she went on to successfully shepherd the Agatha spin-off series. He also seems adept at handling elements of magic and witchcraft in the MCU, which establishes his potential for long-term involvement.
Jac Schaeffer is key to Wanda's future in the MCU
It's worth noting that Jac Schaeffer was not part of the crew Multiverse of madness — and that movie, while decent, didn't do Wanda or her story arc justice. This underlines how essential Schaeffer is and will be to any Wanda-centric project in the future. In fact, there's growing interest among fans on social media that suggests Marvel should make her a Kevin Feige-like figure, overseeing not only the Maximoff family storylines, but other key television projects as well. Many fans already see his absence from the next one Vision research show on Disney+ as a disappointment.
Right now, even more than WandaVisionthe success of Agatha All Along debut season is a sign of growing demand for Jac Schaeffer. She wasn't just the lead writer on that series; he also directed three episodes, including the notable episode 7, “Death's Hand in Mine”. A standalone film about Wanda could involve characters from AAAlike Agatha, Teen (Billy Maximoff) and Aubrey Plaza's Rio/Lady Death. It would prepare them for exciting MCU prospects like Midnight Sons or even Young Avengers. Not to mention, this could all tie into the next one Judgment Day AND Secret Wars events.
Could Schaeffer take on a larger role at Marvel Studios?
Schaeffer's role in major Avengers projects could resemble the way James Gunn served as executive producer Endless war AND End of gamesas credit for how well he handled his Guardians of the Galaxy characters. His record with the MCU films, as the original screenwriter of Black Widow and his uncredited additions to the writing Captain MarvelIt didn't start off in the best way. However, after WandaVision earned an impressive twenty-three Emmy nominations (the most for any limited series that year), Schaeffer will now likely have more authority and autonomy within Marvel Studios.
There is also the (somewhat far-fetched) potential for WandaVision to be renewed for another season if the standalone film idea doesn't work. Schaeffer even commented on this in a 2021 interview with The Hollywood Reporter:
I can't talk about a second season. This fits perfectly with the Marvel philosophy. Kevin is great at coming out and saying, 'Here's what's happening!' up to a certain point. “Here is the field, and this is where the field ends.” A second season is not something that can be discussed and still be on the table.
The MCU is no longer the relatively simple universe it was a decade ago, when it focused on six or more Avengers and a singular threat to the planet. Now, with the multiverse and a growing list of heroes and their variations, keeping track of everything is becoming a challenge. Having someone like Jac Schaeffer take creative control over a specific type of Marvel project, like supernatural stories, could help ease the burden on Kevin Feige. In any case, the point is clear: the MCU can't afford to pursue any future Scarlet Witch stories without Schaeffer's involvement in some way.
