The status of every Vault Hunter in Borderlands before BL4

Summary

  • Some Borderlands Vault Hunters will not return in BL4, with deaths and appearances short-lived.

  • Famous characters from the past like Lilith and Zer0 are confirmed alive for Borderlands 4.

  • The series has amassed 20 playable Vault Hunters in the mainline games, though it's unclear which ones will return besides Zane.

One could argue this Borderlands games live and die by their roster of playable Vault Hunters and the quality of the loot, as these can be the most appealing elements of new games and what drives the hype – and Borderlands 4 it probably won't be any different. Indeed, Borderlands 4Vault Hunters has already received backlash for what some fans have described as “bland design”, further demonstrating how iconic the four playable characters (not counting the Vault Hunters DLC) can be for the series. With four previous major matches Borderlands 4now is a good time to look back and see where each of these playable characters stands.

Not all Borderlands Vault Hunters have survived the events of the series, and those who have not are extremely unlikely to return Borderlands 4if not in flashbacks or maybe even NPC lookalikes. Borderlands can be a quirky series when it comes to story and humor, so it's not impossible to see familiar faces in some shape or form Borderlands 4 – and some of them have already been confirmed by the recent trailer. So far, the series has amassed a total of 20 playable Vault Hunters broken down as follows:

  • 4 inches Borderlands

  • 6 inches Borderlands 2

  • 6 inches Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel

  • 4 inches Borderlands 3

Borderlands 4 is already building on BL3 in one key area

Based on feedback provided by one of its lead developers, Borderlands 4 will not embrace one of the previously important aspects as much.

Explanation of the whereabouts of all playable Borderlands Vault Hunters

Rolando

Roland is one of several Vault Hunters playable in Borderlands games that are dead. Shot by Handsome Jack in Borderlands 2Roland's death was the catalyst for some key events in the series, but is unlikely to be revisited in the future.

Brick

Along with other recurring characters in the series, there is also Brick Borderlands 3albeit in a small role dedicated mainly to one story mission and some side missions. However, he is currently alive and supposedly spending time with Mordecai and Tiny Tina.

Mordecai

Similar to Brick, Mordecai returned Borderlands 3 for a short time. He tragically lost his trusted companion, Bloodwing, in the events of Borderlands 2and then I returned BL3 with a new pet of the same species called Talon. Both Mordecai and Talon are alive.

Lilith

He is initially presumed dead after the events of Borderlands 3Lilith is alive before us Borderlands 4 and will likely still play an important role in the events of the game. It is unclear whether his human form was changed after the end of BL3but it is destined to appear in the sequel.

Explanation of the whereabouts of all playable Borderlands 2 Vault Hunters

Axton

Not much is known about Axton after the events of Borderlands 2but he comes back Borderlands 3of the Arms Race DLC as a commentator for the reality show-style game mode. He is alive before us Borderlands 4.

Savior

In the same spot where Axton is Borderlands 2It's Salvador. Another of the game's four main Vault Hunters, Salvador shares the stage with Axton Borderlands 3 as an ECHO launcher in the Arms Race DLC and is currently alive.

Zer0

Zer0's role in Borderlands 3 he is not as small as the other recurring characters and is involved in the Maliwan vs. Atlas plot. Although the boss fight looks strangely like Zer0 BL3he is alive and still serving under Atlas.

Maya

Maya died in Borderlands 3 in what some fans label as Ava's fault. Ava is a mermaid in training Borderlands 3and inherits Maya's powers after the Calypso twins are defeated. Since Maya met her demise, she will most likely not be seen in Borderlands 4.

Gaige

The first Vault Hunter DLC in Borderlands having left with Krieg, Gaige returned Borderlands 3 for the Guns, Love and Tentacles DLC. Like most Vault Hunters from the past who have returned BL3she is alive at the end of the DLC.

Krieg

The playable Psycho Krieg has its own DLC Borderlands 3which is dedicated to him dealing with the aftermath of Maya's death. Given the sad yet funny nature of the DLC, Krieg is still alive at the end.

Athena

Although Athena is tied up Borderlands: The Pre-Sequelof the infamous Watcher War, she is never seen again in the main games. If spin-offs are anything to go by, Athena is a CEO New tales from the borderlandsand she is presumably alive.

William

It may not come as a surprise to fans that Wilhelm is dead Borderlands 2with Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel explaining his rise to power within Hyperion as a loyalist of Handsome Jack. Therefore, he probably won't return in the next match.

Nisha

Similarly to Wilhelm, Nisha is one of Borderlands 2and can be killed in an optional mission. As such, his status as a playable Vault Hunter is on Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel it was always meant to be short-lived.

Applause

Perhaps the best known Borderlands The character is Claptrap, in which, to the delight of many fans, he became playable Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel. Just like the Psycho cover, Claptrap is Borderlands' mascot and is very much alive.

Timothy

Known as Jack's Doppelganger Borderlands: The Pre-SequelTimothy returns Borderlands 3Moxxi's Handsome Jackpot Heist DLC. He is a supporting character in the DLC and is still alive when it concludes.

Aurelia

Bitter

Not much is known about Amara after the events of Borderlands 3and it is currently impossible to say whether he will return Borderlands 4. However, she was alive in the end BL3.

FL4K

One of the most beloved Vault Hunters in the series, FL4K is the Beastmaster robot of Borderlands 3. Just like Amara, where they were between the events of BL3 AND BL4 they are unknown, but are presumed alive.

Moze

Last but not least, Moze shares the same fate as Amara and FL4K, in that it was playable Borderlands 3 and its current status is unknown. She's presumably alive, though that doesn't necessarily mean she'll be back for the sequel.
