Magic: the gathering was marred by some controversy in the second half of 2024, between the Commander bans and debacle that followed and the poorly received launch of Marvel Secret Lair, but things will likely improve early next year. Although 2025 may not be an entirely good year for the game, mainly due to Magic: the gatheringWith Universes Beyond sets being legal in Standard and the fact that this decision has received backlash, a good change is bound to happen. This is thanks to the re-release of a beloved set, the launch of an entirely new expansion, and a new card type that could take the community by storm.

There will be a lot to do Magic: the gathering next year, with a total of six Standard-legal sets releasing, possibly alongside other Eternal releases, such as preconstructed Commander decks. Beyond that, January will continue the tradition of remastered sets, all while introducing new “headliner” cards. Between Magic: the gatheringit's big Final fantasy set and the new Universes Beyond release schedule, including a Spider-Man expansion, many beginners will likely take to the game, so Wizards of the Coast needs to start 2025 off on the right foot.

Innistrad Remastered will include a new type of card that will presumably be featured in every release in 2025, and these are the new main cards.

What to expect from Magic: The Gathering Headliner cards in 2025

MTG's new headliner cards are serialized from 1 to 500, meaning there will only be a total of 500 copies of that specific card and print in existence for each set the headliners star in. In the case of Innistrad Remastered, the headliner will be a reprint of Edgar Markov, which in itself is an expensive and good card to mine, with a value of around $70. However, the main version of Edgar Markov will likely become one of the Magic: the gatheringthey are the most precious cards since only 500 copies will be printed and it will be very rare to collect them.

The Magic: The Gathering's Death Race set will launch on February 14, 2025

While it may seem difficult to top the reprints of many popular Innistrad cards, Magic: the gathering's new Aetherdrift expansion will be right around the corner to kick off 2025 in style as the first expansion of the legal year in Standard. Defined by MTGby Mark Rosewater, this set will take place across three different floors and feature ten teams, all competing in a deadly race to win the ultimate prize: the Aetherspark.

Based on the art shown so far, Aetherdrift will most likely be set in Kaladesh and Amonkhet, with the third plane still up in the air as it has never been the primary setting of any expansion.

In addition to Aetherdrift featuring this new triplane deathrun concept, it will also have its own main card, which is Aetherspark itself. This card appears to be one MTG Planeswalker itself based on an illustration, but details have yet to be confirmed. However, the expansion seems full of famous characters and locations, so it could be a great release for longtime fans.
