PlayStation has launched a removable disk drive in 2023 compatible with the slim model of its digital PS5. There wasn't much interest in the accessory until a year later, when PlayStation confirmed that its even newer PS5 Pro will be digital-only. The disc drive sold out everywhere soon after, but has since reappeared at GameStop.
The disc drive is currently available at GameStop, but there's a problem. While the price hasn't been increased to take advantage of those who have been waiting for the disc drive to return over the past couple of months, you must be a GameStop Pro member if you want to purchase one. This is GameStop's subscription rewards program, and unfortunately, it's a service you have to pay for.

Before you roll your eyes, click away, and wait for your PS5's disc drive to be restocked elsewhere, there's a chance a GameStop Pro sub might be worth it beyond just providing the ability to purchase the accessory right now. Signing up gives you a $5 reward, so technically you'll get the disk drive for $75 instead of $80. You'll also get $5 a month, so if you stay signed up long enough, you'll earn a lot more than the $25 it costs to be a Pro member, the only caveat is that your monthly rewards can only be spent at GameStop.

GameStop Pro includes a handful of other perks, including access to exclusive deals and products, which is where the PS5 disc drive comes in. While it's frustrating that you need a membership just to buy one, it's a way to avoid scalpers. Aside from simply being popular before the PS5 Pro released, the biggest reason behind selling off hard drives and keeping them was scalpers buying them all up and reselling them at an inflated price.
Even before the hard drive sold out, scalpers had already made their intentions clear when the accessory began appearing on resale sites at a higher price. Clearly scalpers need to earn the money they invested by trying to take advantage of potential PlayStation customers in some way during the holiday season as some of them were forced to sell their PS5 Pros at a loss due to the lack of interest in the mid- gen. update of the new PlayStation console.
Disk Drive for PS5 Digital Edition (Slim)
The PlayStation Removable Hard Drive was created with the thinner model of the digital PS5 in mind. Compatible only with the digital version of the slimmer console, the disc drive can play all PS5 games, most PS4 games and other Blu-rays.
Between the launch of the Pro and PlayStation's 30th anniversary, a few months have passed for new and in-demand PlayStation hardware. Everything in its 30th anniversary collection has sold out multiple times, and, at least for now, it's unclear whether any will be restocked.
