- Limited details on release of anime adaptation, potential to attract drama-loving audiences.
A few days ago, a Takopi's original sin the anime adaptation has been officially confirmed. No further information has been revealed, but it will probably be a movie, as the story is short. Despite being serialized under the Shonen Jump imprint, this is not your usual shounen series.
Takopi's original sin could be, in some ways, compared to The chainsaw man by creator Tatsuki Fujimoto Look back. They are very different stories, but they are touching and tragic stories, with characters that may sometimes be too real. Fujimoto's story, however, is a little happier. Takopi it doesn't spare the reader not only from having to deal with horrible situations and characters we should love and hate at the same time.
Takopi's Original Sin premise and serialization
First we need to answer the question: what exactly is it Takopi's original sin From? It's a bit complicated to answer, because the story, despite being short, is full of twists and turns. It wouldn't be possible to talk about it without mentioning the first important one, so let's say it starts with Takopi, an alien from a “happy planet” who wants to make people happy, meeting Shizuka Kuze, a girl from a poor family who has a hard life. Takopi isn't exactly able to understand all the sadness around and within Shizuka, but after she commits suicide (in chapter 1), he goes back in time to try to stop her from doing so.
It was serialized from 2020 to 2021 onwards Shonen Jump+ app, and subsequently compiled into two volumes. It was written and illustrated by Taizan 5 (pseudonym), who would later create it The deadly sins of the Ichinose family manga (and apparently someone who likes to talk about drama and sin).
The characters are perhaps too real
One of the strong points of the manga are the three main characters, who are deep despite the short plot. Shizuka lives alone with her mother, who works as an escort or a prostitute (or both) and her family is poor. They have a dog, which is important to the plot. His father had divorced his mother years earlier.
He is constantly bullied at school by Marina. At first we're supposed to hate how horrible Marina is to Shizuka, but we soon find out that Marina's life isn't easy either and she's a constant victim of domestic violence. Her tragedy is linked to Shizuka, and she unfairly blames the girl for it, while Shizuka seems to be mostly unaware of the harm she could cause Marina.
But we later find out that Shizuka isn't as “innocent” as she might seem, and can also be cold and horrible. The beginning of the story isn't the only time Takopi travels through time, so we see these characters in different timelines, but tragedy still seems to follow them.
There's also a boy called Azuma, who at first seems to be the brilliant hero of the story. It turns out, of course, that this is not exactly the case. Even though he really lives in a better situation than the two girls, it's not all rosy. He is the class representative and tries to help Shizuka, only to end up involved in a big crime.
What's interesting here is this no one is really “innocent” (except Takopi, maybe). Everyone can be horrible despite, or perhaps because of, the abuse they suffer. It it might be easy to forget that these characters are children in vulnerable situationsthat they should be protected, no matter how badly they react to the environment. In that sense, this story sometimes feels too real (and that's a compliment).
Despite the heavy settings, the story manages to balance sadness and happiness. The painful moments mix with the comical ones, making the story a little (just a little) lighter. Takopi usually provides comic relief, as her ability to misinterpret and understand sadness and negative feelings/reactions is usually cute and funny. It also serves as a warning that a living being who is too happy might also be too innocent. It's brave in its own way, but it also shows that negative feelings are not only important, but part of what makes us human.
What we know about the anime adaptation
Not much information has been shared about the anime adaptation. It's probably a movie, but it could be released in theaters, on streaming, or as a physical OVA. Since it's a Shonen Jump series, more information may be revealed at Jump Festa 2025 later this month. The production only shared a teaser trailer and a key visual.
What can we expect from it?
It's hard to know what to expect without information from the staff, but the series has huge potential. Not only could it appeal to audiences who like dramas (e.g Look back he showed us Shonen Jump dramas can be great), but the staff could be very creative in adapting the story. Despite the time travel and twists, the manga tells the story simply, but an animation could be bolder in telling narratives from different timelines. Regardless, this is a series to look forward to!
