For those of us who speak English, Clair Obscur: the name of Expedition 33 is … well … dark. The “Expedition 33” part perfectly makes sense: it is the 33rd expedition that the island of Lumière inspired by France has undertaken. However, the part of Clair Obscur has raised questions (derives from the French word chiaroscuro, for those who wonder, an artistic style that focuses on the juxtaposition of light and darkness).

Presentation of the new game of Sandfall Interactive – Something 33
While in the West, we are fighting with the meaning of “Clair Obscur”, those in Japan are fighting with the pronunciation of the entire name of the game. The title includes letters and combinations of letters that are not common in the Japanese language, making exceptionally difficult for native speakers to read and pronounce.
According to Automaton Media in Japan, the name has become such a problem that eliminated the “Clair Obscur: Expedition” part and now they simply refer to the game as “something 33”. The site states that “Clair Obscur” in particular is “an unknown word, and many people do not even know how to pronounce it”, citing its difficulty in spelling and the lack of abbreviation options like other reasons of the new name.
A quick search on Twitter shows how much the name has become widespread in the country, with a new tweet containing the word “33” (translated approximately in “something 33”) which is published every minute or so.
It is not surprising that the game started to become popular in Japan, given that the Sandfall Interactive team confirmed that it was taking inspiration from some of the largest exports of role -playing games in the country, including person and Final Fantasy. If this volume of tweets is something to follow, the Japanese audience may have played a significant role in the game by selling so well, reaching a large number of players and breaking the audience review records on Metacritic.
