Doom: The Dark Ages Interactive Preview – Doom Slayer goes medieval
Game Rant recently saw Doom: The Dark Ages in action, and it's shaping up to be the biggest, most ambitious, adrenaline-fueled game yet from Doom Slayer.
Doom has previously kept things simple in its difficulties and related options
Like its main gameplay loops, Destiny it has often remained quite simple regarding its options and settings. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it has long been the norm for the series compared to other games. From Destinyfrom the first iterations of and into more recent generations, the most notable choices available were the aptly named difficulty levels, ranging from “I'm too young to die” to “Ultra-Nightmare”. Each affected standard elements such as damage dealt and received, as well as the number and types of enemies that appear. This has served the series well over the years, and Doom: The Dark Ages seems to keep this tradition intact. But this time it will also expand on that by providing a whole other list of items for players to tweak as they see fit.
Unlike the previous two titles, Doom: The Dark Agess will not include multiplayer.
Doom: The Dark Ages' new set of accessibility sliders will help players navigate their way
As well as showing more Doom: The Dark Ages' and the brutal new tools of destruction it will include, Id executive producer Marty Stratton took a moment to explain the scope of other settings beyond the difficulty that fans will be able to modify:
-
Damage to the player
-
Damage to demons
-
Enemy projectile speed
-
Enemy aggression
-
Stop Windows
-
Stun duration
-
Game speed
-
Resource values
By opening these other aspects to regulation, The dark ages will allow players to find the perfect balance between skill level, preferences and play styles. Now they will be able to mix and match the above to make things more interesting and/or manageable. For example, players could increase the enemy's aggression or damage while simultaneously increasing the amount of resources obtained, creating combinations that remain difficult but fair.
This addition also has the benefit of being more welcoming to newcomers, offering a way to find their comfort zone to enjoy the experience, while at the same time allowing veterans to try their hand at tackling the extremes of the scale. As more and more games incorporate robust accessibility features, Doom: The Dark Ages Making this seemingly minor but still impactful change is an excellent choice that will help the next chapter of Doom Slayer's journey be more fun and satisfying for all players.
