3 Monogatari Series – Off Season and Monsters
Beautiful and touching, if a little irritating
Monogatari Series: Season Off and Monsters
- Release date
- July 6, 2024
- Study
- Lance
- Based on
- Light novel
- Creator
- Isin Nisio
Monogatari series has always been about visual impact and in Off season and monsters, Aniplex/Kôdansha have taken this to a whole new level. With beautiful scenery, great use of color and incredible designs. The story of the young Araragi sisters and how their relationship with the mystical world (sparked around Koyomi) changes is splendid.
The narrative focus of this season reveals many interesting details about Yotsugi Ononoki, one of the most mysterious characters who divides fans between love and hate. This was one of the best seasons for Monogatari, maybe even better than Kizumonogatari, but the world created by Nishio Ishin still has a lot to offer, so we'll see how the power ranking turns out when the producers continue to draw Ikusamonogatari to the delight of their fans.
2 DanMachi – Freya Saga (Season 5)
Visually refined, but heavy on the fanservice
There's been quite a bit of uproar surrounding DanMachi's fifth season, mostly regarding the ending theme (and the animations involved in its production), but more importantly regarding its overall quality. While there haven't been many dissenting voices regarding the adaptation of Freya's Saga, since a lot of concessions (cuts) had to be made to see it animated.
Although many believe that Bell Cranell is a terrible main character, the emotional drama depicted in the fifth season has generated an upheaval among its fans, causing a divide between those who rejoice that the story finally takes on a more mature tone, and those who see the change as an excuse for extreme fanservice. Regardless, the overall production quality is undeniable, and this sequel is ranked among the best of the best of 2024.
1 Arifureta: From Commonplace to World's Strongest (Season 3)
A leap in quality compared to the previous season, but pay attention to the CGI
Arifureta season 3 surprised fans, despite all odds (and excessive fan service), and presented an overall fairly tidy narrative flow, without too many cuts from the novels and manga. Needless to say, it's not the best of the best, but it remains in a comfortable middle position among all the sequels this season. It has improved considerably in both animation and visual effects since season 2, but it still relies heavily on CGI and that can be a problem (remember Failure frameit's a fiasco).
Previously, fans had expressed some distrust towards the show's production, and considering the stiff competition against other Shonen series, it's doing quite well. In this regard, the producers have set the release window (end of 2024) and, with the other shows already closed for the season, Arifureta he still has plenty of time to prove his worth.
