Sea of Azurite is less than a week away and we finally have the full card list, so it's time to start building the deck. The sixth set of Disney Lorcana puts the Pirates front and center with some powerful sailor synergies, while also showcasing Inventors, Robots and everyone's favorite afternoon cartoon, Chip and Dale: Rescue Rangers.

Disney Lorcana: How to Upgrade the Amber/Ruby Starter Deck from the Sea of Azurite
If nautical nonsense is something you crave, this is the starter deck for you.
This set is packed with powerful cards that are sure to impact the meta, while also potentially creating the opportunity for previously unseen ink color combos and archetypes. As you fire up your favorite deck builder and start cooking up some spice, consider these new cards and how they might fit into your new favorite deck.
Maui, half shark
The more you watch Maui, Half-Shark, the better he gets. A 7/5 Evasive character for six inks is already well established before you even get to his two abilities, which individually have the potential to warp the game, but together make Maui one of the coolest legendaries ever.
It's easy to see Maui's potential in existing Ruby decks. You can have him challenge a character to retrieve a Friends of the Beyond, then immediately play him to draw two cards and gain a knowledge. Ruby/Amethyst decks might be able to reduce the cost of Be Prepared now that there's a (somewhat) reliable way to get them back from the discard. In the new burning variant, it provides yet another way to obtain non-interactable knowledge. Plus he can sing A Pirate's Life. Look for Maui, Half-Shark as Ruby's new staple.
Simba, protector of pride
Many Floodborn characters depend on having useful Shift targets, and if Floodborn is good enough you may occasionally find yourself making a mess just to give them something to run through. In the case of Simba, Protector of Pride, its synergy with Simba, Protective Cub is what makes the card powerful. Simba, the Protector of Pride, wants to practice, and Simba, the Protective Cub gives him the opportunity to practice immediately. The fact that you can play both Simbas for the same cost as simply casting Protector of Pride could make this combo a strong point in Amber decks.
The explosion potential created by this Simba is remarkable. You could spend your first four turns creating low-cost, high-lore characters like Piglet; Pooh, Pirate Captain; and Daisy Duck, Donald's Date, then release both Simbas on the fifth turn (or earlier if you already have the Protective Cub in play), undertake a mission, and prepare your characters to do so again on the next turn. The downside is that you'll need both Simbas to make this useful, but the upside will be worth the extra slots in your Amber deck.
You're back
At first glance, a three-cost, uninkable action with such a simple ability might be easy to overlook, but once you start thinking about all the things you can do with You Came Back, it becomes one of the scariest cards of expansion. Its simplicity gives it flexibility, and smart deck builders will find plenty of ways to exploit it.
Emerald/Sapphire (or Baja Blast if you're a sophisticated Illuminator) hasn't had much success in the meta yet, but consider what will happen when you can quest multiple times in a turn with Ariel, Treasure Collector, or Tamatoa, So Bright!. Why waste time trying to make a Lucky Dime when You Came Back does the same thing for less than half the cost? Mufasa, Ruler of Pride Rock already prepares your inkwell when he undertakes a quest, now You Came Back will allow you to do two quests, gaining eight knowledge and preparing your inkwell twice, effectively giving you three times the ink you had to work with in precedence. This could be the card that finally makes Baja Blast possible.
Alice, expert sailor
Sapphire has a very defined identity. Augments and reproduces many objects. Whether you play Sapphire/Steel or Ruby/Sapphire, the game plan is very similar. Alice, Savvy Sailor doesn't fit that style of deck, but her ability is so powerful that it could bring about a completely different type of Sapphire deck, which is a really intriguing prospect.
Goofy, Expert Shipwright has a similar ability, so he also has a lot of potential in this set.
Alice could be a great player in a Sapphire Aggro deck thanks to her impressive stats and even more impressive abilities. Like Donald Duck, musketeer soldier; creates opportunities to quickly gain initial knowledge of the game while protecting vulnerable characters from certain threats.
But it also lets you play as previously non-playable characters who were previously considered too slow and vulnerable. Even if you don't get the benefit of gaining extra knowledge, giving a character like Arthur, the Wizard's Apprentice or Simba, Scrappy Cub a chance to gain value before they are inevitably banished is more than enough to make Alice worth it the penalty. If Sapphire Aggro becomes a reality, we'll have Alice to thank for that.
Calhoun, Marine Sgt
Calhoun is Mr. Smee, a good and perhaps even better clumsy companion. It's common for one- and two-ink slots to change over the course of a season as the meta evolves, but I expect Calhoun to define the early game in Steel matchups immediately and for the foreseeable future.
Characters who gain knowledge by challenging, like Robin Hood, Champion of Sherwood Forest, are always very valuable because they allow you to control the board without sacrificing the knowledge you would otherwise gain from quests. Calhoun not only gains extra knowledge when challenging, but she also has Stamina +1, almost granting her more board swings than her opponent at the start of the game. There are only about 20 cards that can be traded with Calhoun in the game, and only five or six can be played. Expect to see a lot more three-Force, one-cost, and two-cost characters played in this set thanks to Calhoun.
