A terminally ill fan of Gearbox's legendary FPS series was able to play Borderlands 4 ahead of its scheduled release in 2025. While it's unclear when all fans of the game will be able to get their hands on the title, Borderlands 4 remains one of the most anticipated releases of next year.
Boasting four main titles and a number of popular spin-offs, the Borderlands the series is going strong 15 years after the release of the first title in 2009. Very little is known Borderlands 4with a short trailer shown at Gamescom in August giving fans a little look at what they can expect. The internet has become fertile ground for theories and requests leading up to the game's inevitable launch, with many fans focused on the possibility of returning characters and who Borderlands 4 will choose as the villain. A deserving fan now has at least some of these answers, having the chance to experience the game for themselves.

Every Borderlands game has had one of the weapon manufacturers as an evil faction, so it's worth looking for a potential one for Borderlands 4.
In October, Gearbox Entertainment president and CEO Randy Pitchford reached out to a terminally ill patient Borderlands fan named Caleb McAlpine who had taken to Reddit to ask for the chance to play the game early. The 37-year-old disabled veteran explained on the online forum that he had about two years to live due to a cancer diagnosis and was eager to play Borderlands 4 Soon. According to a new update post on Reddit, McAlpine's dream has come true, as Gearbox took him and a friend to Gearbox's headquarters in Frisco, Texas, to try out the game, as well as meet the developers and himself Pitchford. “We have to play for what they have Borderlands 4 so far, and it's been great,” McAlpine wrote. “I don't know if I'll be there when the game comes out, but I just want to say thank you to all of you for all your love and support and helping make that happen. It was truly an amazing experience and it was just amazing.”
Borderlands 4 is “awesome” according to a terminally ill fan

While many hoped to see the return of Handsome Jack, Pitchford openly stated that the new villain in Borderlands 4 will be “something far more dangerous and sinister” than everyone's favorite villain.
