Just when you thought Nintendo was quietly starting to wind down support for the Switch as rumors of its successor continue to swirl, it goes ahead and announces a slate of new games coming through the end of 2023 and into 2024. Topping the list of those games in terms of both anticipation and let’s be honest, probably sales and popularity when it’s all said and done is Super Mario Bros. Wonder. The first truly original 2D Mario game in a very long time.
Nintendo revealed Wonder during a Direct earlier this year and gave the game a Direct of its very own at the end of August. Revealed during the latter, among other things, was the revelation that almost all of Wonder’s playable characters can turn into elephants, and that the game takes place in the Flower Kingdom, not the Mushroom Kingdom.
Mario Wonder exclusively hits Nintendo Switch on October 20, a date that will effectively be gaming in 2023’s version of Barbie and Oppenheimer debuting in cinemas on the same day. That’s because since neither game is willing to budge, Wonder and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 are still set to launch on the same day. Since both games will only be available on their respective home consoles, while it’ll be a busy weekend for those who own both, there may not be as much crossover as you might think.
Super Mario Bros. Wonder
Super Mario Bros. Wonder is a brand new 2D Mario game launching exclusively on Nintendo Switch on October 20, 2023. Reimagining the original Mario game format yet again, it will include a lot of firsts for the series such as Elephant Mario and a playable Princess Daisy.
Much like Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, co-op will be a big part of Wonder if you want it to be. Designed for up to four people to play at the same time. Wonder will be winding back the clock and competing with another 2D sidescrolling co-op game launching that very same week, Sonic Superstars. It’ll be the first time in a while that 2D Mario and Sonic games have launched this close together. In fact, I’m fairly certain there has never been a time when 2D Sonic and Mario games have launched just three days apart.
There’s going to be a lot of Mario for Switch owners between now and the end of 2023. Not only Wonder but also via the Super Mario RPG remake. Moving on into 2024, a Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon remaster is on the horizon, as is an untitled game starring Princess Peach. Away from Mario, we’ve still got Metroid Prime 4 to look forward to, right?
