The infamously blocky boat people from the first Spider-Man have sadly been updated to look like regular boat-faring citizens of New York in Spider-Man 2.
Thanks to Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, Spider-Man: Miles Morales, and, based on the reviews, Spider-Man 2, Insomniac Games has made a name for itself over the past few years with how well it’s managed to utilise the power of the PS5. With characters being able to warp to locations instantly and dozens of particle effects filling the screen without so much as a frame drop, it’s hard to imagine the developer as having any technological limits.
As undefeatable as Insomniac Games may seem, that hasn’t always been the case. The best example of this can be found in 2018’s Spider-Man and its infamous boat people. If you used the game’s photo mode to try and view the people driving boats around New York City, you’d be met with a Minecraft-looking blocky person with a terrifying squished face.
This was spotted by the internet pretty quickly and, as you’d expect, turned into a meme, but it looks like Insomniac wasn’t having that this time around, as the boat people have sadly been updated. As shared by Twitter user OctoriousYT, zooming in on the boat people now shows that they look just as detailed as any other NPC in the game.
The boat people getting an upgrade isn’t too much of a surprise considering Spider-Man 2 has a lot more focus on the water, as Miles and Peter can not only glide over it pretty safely, but also grind on it for a short while, just like in Sunset Overdrive. Players finally have a reason to be on the water, so it makes sense that these NPCs aren’t as horrifying looking this time around. As funny as the boat people were in the first game, players weren’t technically supposed to go for into the water, so Insomniac didn’t really need to give them any detail.
Although it’s nice to see Insomniac Games update the boat people for the modern era, it is a little bit of a shame that such a funny meme has been taken away from the game, especially considering Spider-Man Remastered purposefully kept them intact and even acknowledged the easter egg. If you tried to view the people on the boat in that game, you’d see that they looked just as blocky as they did in the 2018 release, but with a post-it note stuck to them saying “Did you miss us?”.
