5 The surge 2

A sci-fi soulslike with new combat

Released
September 24, 2019

OpenCritic rating
Strong

The surge 2 It essentially improves on its predecessor in almost every aspect, including the variety of weapons and armor the player can equip. This expansion of the first game's world and lore may not be as tight and focused as the original, but it's certainly a step in the right direction for players looking to get their hands on some boss weapons. The boss weapons in this game are not as numerous as in other titles on this list, but they can be obtained in the same way that any equipment can be obtained The surge securities: excluding them from their owners. The surge 2 uses a stun mechanic that opens enemies up to dismemberment, allowing players to target specific body parts to then acquire the associated weapon or armor.

Therefore, obtaining these boss weapons is incredibly rewarding. They're often difficult to obtain, but by purchasing them, players will have a piece of gear that will outmaneuver their enemies at that point in the game, granting each an incredible sense of weight and power.

4 Vena code

Vampire Waifu Souls is generous with its boss weapons

Released

OpenCritic rating
Strong

Vena code casts a pretty wide net. It's a good title worth putting hours into for anime fans, vampire fans or Souls fans, with the caveat that the latter group may find the combat a little easy after some of the more intense ones Souls and Soulslike games available today. Blood Codes, which radically rewrite the player's abilities and stats, are the main feature used for gameplay variation in this title, but supplementing these codes is an incredibly wide range of boss weapons, only further expanded by the DLC and by the bosses they add.

3 Deadly shell

Every weapon is a boss weapon!

OpenCritic rating
Strong

This entirely underrated Soulslike is a love letter to the genre and feels much more like an experience tailored to its shorter playtime. Part of this design philosophy that leans heavily towards quality over quantity can be seen in the range of weapons available to the player. Each weapon must be unlocked by defeating a recurring boss, who wields the very weapon players are trying to obtain.

Using shells instead of regular armor means that players have a great deal of variation in how they mix each shell with its corresponding weapons to create a unique playstyle. Each weapon has a unique skill set and elemental affinity that makes learning to wield them feel as much of an exploration as wandering through the dark and terrible setting of Deadly shell.

Halls and Sanctuary it's one of the best Soulslike games overall; a fantastic mix of Metroidvania-style exploration with a Soulslike aesthetic and an incredibly interesting faction system that changes playstyles and how the game is structured overall. This is a noteworthy title Souls veteran attention, and worthy of a few replays, but part of what makes this game shine are the colossal boss weapons on offer and the satisfying punch they add to the game.

Combining the token obtained from a fallen boss, usually an ear, with the right materials will transform the ingredients into a boss weapon that universally feels balanced and powerful, making it one of the best 2D Soulslikes available today.

OpenCritic rating
Powerful

Labeled by many as FromSoft's magnum opus, Elden Ring'S the immense quality and detail speaks for itself in every corner of The Lands Between, from Limgrave to the base of the Erdtree and everywhere in between. This game has a plethora of awesome, albeit terrifying, boss battles where players battle each other relentlessly until they emerge victorious.

Part of what makes these boss battles so compelling, whether they're monolithic mainline bosses or lesser enemies sequestered in a smaller dungeon, are the weapons they reward their conquerors with. Players willing to separate themselves from the cacophony of meta-build conversations will find that nearly every boss weapon they encounter or transmute will fit into a solid, reliable build to meet the challenges of The Lands Between.
