The 2011 version of Sonic Generations saw modern Sonic team up with his younger, Genesis-era self to race through classic levels from across the franchise and put an end to the monstrous Time Eater, and this premise remains mostly unchanged in Sonic X Shadow Generations. What has been changed are many of the in-game conversations between the Sonics and their rescued friends, as detailed by YouTube user Shadiochao (and noted by TheGamer). Some of these altered interactions are seemingly less mean-spirited than in the original game, with Knuckles no longer pointing out Classic Sonic's gut and Amy no longer slamming Knuckles into a tree during the game's end celebration.
Sonic X Shadow changes several character lines and interactions
Other Sonic X Shadow Generations dialogue changes add stronger references to the Sonic the Hedgehog game continuity, which fits with the fact that the original was released as an anniversary title celebrating 20 years of Sega's platforming mascot. For example, Tails now explicitly recognizes the Chemical Plant Sonic the Hedgehog 2 instead of saying it looks “familiar”, Sonic mentions the Time Stones Sonic CD after realizing he is time traveling. Modern Sonic also speaks after saving his friends, whereas he would remain silent like Classic Sonic in the original Sonic Generations.
Now that Sonic X Shadow Generations is available for Early Access players to see for themselves, these changes to characters and dialogue have garnered mixed reactions. Some fans are happy that Sonic and company now remember the past events they are currently reliving, while others find the changes to the characters' conversations unnecessary. Nonetheless, Sonic X Shadow Generations has been a success so far, with much praise directed at its new campaign with a shadow-focused story.
