Russian court keeps Frenchman accused of gathering military data in custody

MOSCOW: A Russian court on Thursday ruled that Laurent Vinatier, a French researcher accused of illegally gathering military information, will remain in pretrial detention until Aug. 5, the press service of the Moscow courts reported. Vinatier, an expert on the former Soviet Union with a long track record in Russia, has been charged with illegally obtaining confidential Russian military information that could be useful to foreign intelligence services, a crime that carries a penalty of up to five years in prison.
