The season begins with a great episode, introducing a younger version of Yuri, Rin, and Yukio's mother. This episode mainly focuses on how Yuri spent her life as a child and how she met Shiro. As for our protagonists, we see Rin Okamura travel back in time and meet Mephisto, who acts as his guide throughout the game.

Back to where it all began

Meeting with Yuri and Shiro

The episode begins with Rin Okumura arriving 40 years ago and seeing a younger father, Shiro Fujimoto, as well as another version of Mephisto. One thing to note is that the animation is as stunning as ever and the character designs are absolutely stunning. The effort put into the details of the characters, especially Mephisto, is truly commendable.

When Rin and Mephisto meet, the latter explains that he is here to guide him but also warns Rin that this particular story will end in tragedy and he better remember that. Only seconds later, Rin encounters a young Yuri in a state of extreme poverty. This is when Mephisto warns Rin that she shouldn't meddle with people from the past. While it won't cause a time paradox, it will cause confusion.

Now, what he means by this isn't exactly known, it could imply that Rin was planning to change something in the past. Although Yuri appeared to be living as a homeless person, she seemed happy to have found her family, including a group of other homeless people and an Obaba who was missing an eye.

Introduction Of Satan

While the homeless people are conversing, we learn about Yuri playing with a blue fireball, to which Obaba responds that it is actually a Rinka, also known as Souls of the Dead and even Hellfire. Now Mephisto advances time a bit and we see Yuri playing with Rinka who is actually Satan.

What's heartbreaking is that Satan actually ends up burning the place where Yuri was, which also results in the death of his founding family.

This scene also does a great job of portraying what homeless people go through on a daily basis. Even after their tragic deaths, they continue to be disrespectful. The adorable Yuri, after much suffering, stumbles upon Shiro's little hideout, marking their first meeting.

Being sent to the mental hospital

Suddenly, some exorcists burst into the small hideout and begin interrogating Shiro. They also find Yuri and decide to take them both to the asylum, which is actually the Exorcism Academy. This is because Yuri can also see the Demonic Black Dog that the exorcists brought with them.

At the episode's conclusion, we see a heartbreaking flashback where Rin exclaims how he was a troubled kid and had no one besides Yukio and Shiro. So while Rin still had a few people to get by on, his mother had no one, which made him extremely sad. Yuri is therefore destined to become an exorcist in the exorcist school.

Final thoughts

If the first episode looks so promising, we can only imagine how good the rest of the season would be. The animation is a real treat to the eyes and the character designs, especially those of Mephisto, Yuri and Shiro, are well done.

The opening Tsukaku of Amazarashi is a real success, and the final song, as well as the visuals, are beautiful and serene yet heartbreaking at the same time. As Mephisto said, this could end tragically, but we are ready for what The Blue Exorcist: The Blue Night Saga has in store for us.
