Key points
- The PS5 has received a new system software update for October 2024.
- The 07.24-10.20.00 update adds progress labels to PS5 Activity cards.
- The firmware update also improves PS5 system performance and stability, as well as messaging and usability on certain screens.
A new system software update has just been made available PlayStation 5 users. Weighing in at just 1.3GB, users shouldn't expect many new features from this update, but it does make one major change to the PS5's activity cards feature.
As far as firmware updates go, the last couple of months have been pretty lively for PS5 owners. In early September, Sony released the 24.06-10.00.00 update for the PS5, which introduced the new Welcome Hub, custom 3D audio profiles, adaptive charging for controllers, and more. Unfortunately, users who have installed the update have reported major graphical issues while running Final Fantasy16 on PS5, resolved about eight days later with a new update.

Lies of P previews PS5 Pro improvements
Soulslike Lies of P, inspired by 2023's Pinocchio, is looking to receive a big performance upgrade for the PlayStation 5 Pro launch in November.
It's been over a month since then and Sony has now updated the PS5 firmware to version 24.07-10.20.00. This is a rather light update as it only focuses on improving the Activity card submenu in the PS5 UI. These game-specific tiles allow players to dive into specific missions, game modes, multiplayer playlists, etc. directly from the PS5 control center, which can be accessed by pressing the PlayStation logo button on the DualSense controller. Launching a game from its Activity tab can also skip splash screens entirely.
The PS5's Activity cards can therefore be a nifty way to save time, and the 24.07-10.20.00 update improves them slightly by adding labels showing “In progress”, “Not started” or “Completed”, depending on the player's progress in a particular activity. Making the process of tracking progress for missions or game modes a little smoother, even without revealing potential spoilers, is a welcome change for PS5 users who often use Activity cards. Beyond that, the update brings the usual improvements in system performance and stability.
Sony has undoubtedly added a myriad of useful features and optimizations to the PS5 via system software updates over the years, nearly ticking off everything fans wanted to see on the console. However, system-wide custom themes continue to elude the PS5, despite the feature being present on the PS3 and PS4. With the PS5 already halfway through its lifecycle, many are wondering why Sony is taking so long to add themes to the console. One can only hope that the feature arrives with a PS5 firmware update in the near future.

- Potential spoilers will however remain hidden.
- We have improved the performance and stability of the system software.
