PlayStation Stars makes a controversial change to rewards

Key points

  • Sony appears to be changing the store credit options available through PlayStation Stars.
  • While some users report that there is now only a single $10 option available, others say the feature has disappeared altogether.
  • Starting October 24, PlayStation Stars Points earned by users will expire within 12 months from the previous 24 months.

Sony has once again angered the PlayStation community after making a controversial change to the PlayStation Stars program, this time changing the number of options available when redeeming store credit for program points. While some users report that PlayStation has reduced store credit options, others report that the feature has been removed from Stars entirely.

Since PlayStation Stars launched globally in 2022, the program has become a much-loved part of the PlayStation experience. Registration is completely free and allows users to earn points by purchasing games or DLC via PlayStation Store, or by completing campaigns and activities, which can range from simply playing a specific game or earning a certain trophy. After accumulating some points, Sony is allowing users to spend them in the Stars section of the PlayStation app, with digital collectibles, full games, and store credit up for grabs. However, it seems that the latter has recently received a controversial change and fans are not happy.

Sony's PS Plus Premium and Extra subscription tiers are packed with horror games, but which are the best and scariest titles?

In August, PlayStation users were left angry over a controversial update to Stars' terms of service, which confirmed that players would have less time to use their Points and would no longer be able to earn them through subscriptions like PlayStation Plus. Now , on the same day the previous change goes into effect, users have noticed that the options available for redeeming store credit have been reduced, with some saying they've been removed altogether. It's unclear what Sony's intentions are at the moment, but fans aren't happy either way.

PlayStation Stars users are not happy with the new change

While Sony's PlayStation Plus subscription service remains the most popular paid program, PlayStation Stars has always been beloved because it allows users to turn their points into PlayStation Store credit. However, Reddit users now report that those options have been reduced from 1,250 points for $5 and 5,000 points for $20 down to just one option: 2,500 points for $10. But not everyone seems to be seeing the same options, as some say that the option to redeem store credit is no longer available. “I'm in the UK and there are no more options,” said Reddit user Bamila, while an Australian-based user claims to be able to see the new $10 option.

It's possible that as the PlayStation Stars terms of service are updated today (October 24), the app is being updated and has caused the options to disappear for some. PlayStation could also adjust the options to just a $10 store credit option, instead of removing them entirely.

Many users are making it known that redeeming store credit for PlayStation Stars points was a key part of the experience. Reddit user KristopherAtcheson said: “I'm in California, USA, and my wallet funds have run out. Maybe it's just a glitch, but I doubt it. If this isn't a glitch, then why belong to [Stars] Anyway? It's not worth it unless you have funds in your wallet.” The ability to redeem store credit was sorely missed by users when PlayStation Stars went offline earlier this year, so whether Sony will now remove it altogether option, fans will likely stop using the program entirely.
