PlayStation has reportedly canceled 2 live service games

Summary

  • PlayStation has canceled two upcoming live service projects from Days Gone developer Bend Studio and Demon's Souls remake developer Bluepoint Games.

  • Bend Studio was reportedly working on a third-person open-world military shooter, while Bluepoint Games was working on a live-service God of War game.

  • Sony will not shut down Bend Studio and Bluepoint Games and is working closely with both teams to figure out next steps, but layoffs are possible.

This was reported by a reliable source PlayStation has canceled two upcoming live-service games from its first-party portfolio. The cancellations concern Bluepoint Games and Bend Studio and give further credence to the idea that PlayStation may scale back its live service ambitions.

Sony had big aspirations for PlayStation's live service initiative at the start of the PS5 generation. In 2022, the company was planning to release at least 10 live-service PlayStation games by 2026. However, this goal began to shrink as the years went by, with several delays and cancellations hitting PlayStation's first-party studios. The most notable of these cancellations was that of Naughty Dog The last of us in line live service project, which finished development at the end of 2023. Live service projects from other PlayStation studios such as Firesprite, London Studio, Insomniac Games, Bungie, etc. are also available. They were eliminated.

Rumor: the next PlayStation State of Play could be held in February

A reputable insider claims that PlayStation could broadcast the very first State of Play presentation of 2025 next month.

A few months after the gigantic failure of ConcordPlayStation's live services venture has taken another major hit. Respected industry insider Jason Schreier recently wrote a Bloomberg report stating that PlayStation has deleted two more games from the live service, which was later confirmed by a company spokesperson. One of these canceled projects is the Unannounced open world action game from Bend Studiothe developer of 2019 Days gone by. The team first confirmed that it was developing this brand new IP in June 2022, and some recent rumors revealed that Bend Studio was working on a third-person military shooter.

All games on the PlayStation Live service canceled so far

  • Bending study: Open-world military shooter
  • Bluepoint Games: God of War Live Game
  • Bungie: Third-person spin-off of Destiny, codenamed Payback
  • Fire Spirit: Twisted Metal live service game
  • Fire walking studies: Concord (closed two weeks after launch and studio closed)
  • Games for insomniacs: Spider-Man live service game
  • London studio: Live Cooperative Game (Closed Studio)
  • Bad dog: The last of us in line

The other project PlayStation canceled was a live service God of war title by Bluepoint Gamesthe developer behind the beloved remakes of The shadow of the Colossus AND Demon Souls. Bluepoint Games joined PlayStation Studios in September 2021 and immediately teased that it was working on “original content,” exciting fans who wanted the studio to develop a new game instead of a remake. Bluepoint's specific wording has led many to believe that instead of a brand new IP, the studio could be working on an original project based on an existing PlayStation IP, now confirmed to have been God of war. The release windows for these live service games were unknown, but now that they've been canceled, fans will unfortunately have to wait a long time to hear from Bend Studio and Bluepoint Games.

Thankfully, Sony has confirmed that Bend Studio and Bluepoint Games won't be closing, but layoffs and job cuts aren't out of the question just yet. The company is also working closely with both PlayStation studios to determine their next projects. Given the long-winded nature of AAA game development, however, these games may not see the light of day until the PS6 generation.
