Exclusive first-party IP has been a big part of Play stationidentity since the early days of the PS1, with beloved platformer mascots like Spyro the Dragon AND Crash Bandicoot becoming the face of Sony's first console for years. That strong affinity for exclusive first-party PlayStation IP continued well into the 2000s, with franchises like Unexplored, God of WarAND Little big planet everything is becoming synonymous with PS3. Fast forward about a decade, and that affinity for first-party IP has grown exponentially, with the likes of The Last of Us, Horizon, God of WarAND Marvel's Spider-Man all becoming the main selling point for Sony consoles.
PlayStation has no shortage of IPs ready and waiting to be launched, but there are still some franchises hiding in the shadows of Sony’s past that deserve a second chance. PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale is one of those titles, a game that failed to live up to expectations upon its release in 2012, but could thrive today.
A new Battle Royale All-Stars for PlayStation could do two things at once
A PlayStation All-Stars sequel would have a ton of new icons to choose from
A platform fighting game that revolves around building up a special attack meter to knock opponents out of the arena, PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale had an interesting roster. At launch, All-Star Battle Royale featured 20 different fighters. Many of these fighters from the base game came from beloved first-party PlayStation franchises such as Unexploredby Nathan Drake, God of WarKratos, Jak and Daxter, Ratchet and Clank and Little big planetThe Sackboy of.
However, the roster also had its fair share of third-party characters, such as BioshockThe Big Daddy, DMCDante, Solid metal gearRaiden, and TekkenHeihachi Mishima. While these characters have all been well played and are undeniable gaming icons, they are not PlayStation-exclusive mascots. The same was true for PlayStation All-Stars Battle RoyaleDLC of, which added Dead spaceby Isaac Clarke.
While a crossover fighter doesn't just need characters exclusive to that platform to be successful, it could have made PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royalea little stronger if it was filled with iconic first-party faces. And it would be much easier for a new All-Star Battle Royale to reach, with a lot of new proprietary characters to bring to the table.
From PlayStation All-Stars Battle RoyaleIn 2012, a myriad of new icons joined the PlayStation family. HorizonAloy is, Ghost of TsushimaThe Jin, The Last of Us' Ellie and Joel, and Marvel's Spider-Man 2Peter Parker and Miles Morales would all be great choices for a new PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale game, and this is just the beginning, with games like Blood-borne, Return, Astrobotand also the God of War Each Norse saga offers its own cast of beloved characters.
The platform-fighter genre could use a game like PlayStation All-Stars right now
The platform fighting game genre already has a lot of great games, from Rissahalla TO Nickelodeon 2 All-Star Brawl TO Rivals of the Etherbut the genre's flagship franchise may be absent for a while. While still incredibly popular, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is almost six years old and there's currently no word on when fans might see another installment in the genre-defining series. If it acts fast enough, a new PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale could fill this gap very well.
