Nintendo Switch receives a new system update

Nintendo has released a new system update for NintendoSwitchSwitch Lite and OLED console, giving priority to improving system stability. The latest patch for the Nintendo Switch family arrived in June 2024 with version 18.1.0, which added the ability to post screenshots to Twitter and Smash World via Nintendo Switch Home. In total, four updates were released for the consoles this year.

The dataminer apparently confirmed that “every component of the system has been updated” and explained that this was “normal for major updates, as the entire operating system is rebuilt with a newer SDK version.” Considering the upcoming Switch 2 announcement, several Nintendo fans were surprised to see additional system updates rolling out for current consoles, joining a patent filed for Nintendo Switch dock improvements earlier in the year.

Most Nintendo users have the upcoming Switch 2 announcement firmly in their sights, and some Redditors were comically convinced that the next console would only be version 20.0.0 for the regular Switch. A potential Switch 2 design leaked online recently, sparking discussion about its larger size, and multiple users in the Nintendo subreddit wondered if dataminers had found anything related to the Switch 2 in the recent patch. However, OatmealDome weighed in on this topic, stating that the 19.0.0 update was linked to new releases of the Switch development kit for game developers, rather than anything directly related to Switch 2.

Fans have speculated on a possible reveal date for Switch 2, convinced that the arrival was coded within a Mario and Luigi: Brotherhood tweet, and speculation about the console's launch title is already well underway, including a new one Super Smash Bros. game or the alleged port of Final Fantasy 7 Remake.
