Nicolas Cage donates $5000 to Aussie Telethon while filming upcoming movie in Australia

Nicolas Cage continues to surprise and delight fans Down Under as he films his new movie, The Surfer.

The Hollywood star is currently filming the thriller in Yallingup, Western Australia, but that did not stop him from pausing on preparations to make a very special phone call over the weekend during Channel 7’s Telethon benefiting Aussie children’s charities.

Cage, 59, shocked presenter Rick Ardon when he phoned in from the remote set to the Telethon NRMA Call Centre in Perth to pledge a $5000 cash donation.

“I’d love to be with you right now but I am filming down south,” Cage said in a voicemail, aired for viewers to hear.

“I’d like to ask you to please donate to Telethon and help some children, maybe save some children’s lives.”

Ardon was the one to reveal Cage’s generous donation on camera.

“A good effort, and what’s more Cage has given us $5000,” the host told viewers.

The Hollywood actor flew into Sydney with his wife, Riko Shibata, and their one-year-old daughter, August, last week before making the connecting flight to Perth.

And once in the capital, he wasted no time making himself at home, shopping for supplies at a local grocer.

Cage was seen grocery shopping with Riko in the small town of Busselton where he was spotted pushing a trolley outside a Woolworths supermarket. The actor’s cart was filled to the brim with everyday items such as potatoes, paper towels and nappies.

They also made a pit stop at local Asian store Food of Asia, where they reportedly bought $400 worth of goods, including Japanese sauces, kimchi and eggs.

Although filming on Cage’s new movie is currently running two weeks behind schedule, but production is well underway on the film.

In The Surfer, Cage plays a man who returns to his beachside hometown in Australia, years after moving to the US.

However, after he is humiliated in front of his teenage son by a local gang of surfers who claim ownership over his local beach, a territorial war breaks out where the stakes soon escalate out of control.
