2024 will be the 15th anniversary of two very popular anime series, Steins Gate AND Monogatari. These two series seemingly have nothing in common at first glance, other than that they are both fantasy/sci-fi anime and are becoming all-time hits. However, that hasn't stopped the new series from announcing a very unexpected collaboration, which will be coming later this year.

The news was first anticipated by Steins Gate X's official page (formerly Twitter) on September 12. Then, a more official announcement came via YouTube last week, announcing a formal anniversary collaboration event that would be taking place between the two series. The collaboration celebration will take place in three distinct parts: an event at Tokyo Tower, a themed bar, and a special pop-up shop.

Everything you need to know about the collaboration

When this collaboration was first hinted at through the Steins:Gate X account, was vague at best. That didn’t stop fans from picking up on the clues left in the post less than 24 hours after it was originally posted, however, and speculation about a possible collaboration began. The day after the mysterious post went live, Siliconera’s Stephanie Liu posted this translation and interpretation:

The Tweet in question appears to say Okabe, that the operation is going well. Then, the speaker reacts with shock to some emojis. After recovering, they say that this is another Steins Gate choice and then conclude the message with El Psy Kongroo, which is the usual way Okabe ends his phone calls.

The emojis in the Tweet are a crab, a snail, a monkey, a snake, a cat, a flower, and then two vampires. These emojis in this order appear to be a reference to the Monogatari light novel series. In Monogatari, the main character Koyomi Araragi helps girls he meets at school or in town with problems that involve supernatural oddities. In Hitagi Crab, he helps his classmate and future girlfriend Hitagi Senjogahara with a crab that stole her peso. Then, in Mayoi Mai Mai (Snail), he helps a lost girl named Mayoi Hachikuji get home. And so on.

They were right, and a little over a month later, the official event was announced. The YouTube trailer is just over a minute long, so not many details have been released at the moment. What has been announced, however, is that there will be a special event at Tokyo Tower, along with a themed Animax Café, taking place in mid-October 2024. Additionally, there will be an exclusive pop-up shop in mid-November 2024.

While no official details have been released yet, we can speculate based on past events about what will likely be available. Previous anime events at Tokyo Tower have included character silhouettes and photo opportunities for fans, usually with the Tokyo skyline in the background, along with special merchandise featuring the characters and Tokyo Tower. An Animax Cafe will no doubt have a special anime-themed menu, along with even more exclusive merchandise. And finally, a pop-up shop will be just that: a ton of special merchandise to purchase!

Since the promotional video features the characters of both Steins:Gate AND Monogatari wearing each other's clothes, the collaboration goods will likely be the same. It will be a very special event for fans of both series, as no one could have ever imagined that the two anime would ever meet for something like this. It's a very special way to celebrate their 15th anniversary, and more details will be coming soon, as the events will begin in less than a month.
