Mew ex Guide (Deck, Strategy, Counter)

Quick links

With the release of Mew ex in Pokemon Pocketthe META of the game is at an interesting stage. On the one hand, Pikachu and Mewtwo dominate PvP matches. On the other hand, Mew ex has the potential to shake up the metagame, but it also fits well into emerging Mewtwo ex decks. In a way, Mew ex balances its impact on the META by boosting a higher-tier archetype while providing a counter to it. However, we will have to wait a little longer to see the full effects, as Mew ex is still a relatively new card.

Blastoise ex is among the few Pokemon Pocket cards that can sideline some metagame decks in PvP with a little luck; here's how to exploit it.

Mew ex card overview

description of mew ex in pokemon tcg pocket.

  • HP: 130
  • ATT: 20 (minimum damage). The maximum damage depends on the enemy's active Pokemon.
  • Base movement: Psychocolpo. 20 damage for a psychic energy.
  • Secondary move: Genome hacking. Choose one of your opponent's Active Pokemon's attacks and use it as this attack.
  • Weakness: Dark type

Mew ex is a 130 HP Basic Pokemon with the ability to copy the attack of the enemy's active Pokemon. This unique move makes Mew ex one of the deadliest counters and tech cards in the game, capable of one-shotting META cards like Mewtwo ex.

What makes Mew ex even more interesting is its ultimate move, Genome Hacking, which works with all types of energy. This means that Mew ex is not limited to Psychic-type decks and can be added to various lineups as a versatile tech option.

Mew ex also works in synergy with Budding Expeditioner, one of the most recent Supporter cards Pokemon Pocket. Acting like Kouga for Mew ex, Budding Expeditioner retrieves it from the active spot and heals it, essentially providing a free retreat. Together, they create a counterline that is difficult to manage, especially if the user faces the Energy problem with cards like Misty or Gardevoir.

The best deck for Mew ex

In the current metagame of Pokemon Pocket, Mew ex works best in a refined Mewtwo ex and Gardevoir deck. This build pairs Mew ex with Mewtwo ex and Gardevoir's Evolution lineup. The “refined” part comes from the Trainer Cards, where you will have to include Mythical Slab and Budding Expeditioners, two new cards from the Mythical Island mini-set. Here is the complete deck list.

Mew ex deck synergies

  • Mew ex can deal damage and eliminate the enemy's former Pokemon.

  • The budding shipper helps pick up Mew ex when Mewtwo ex is built.

  • Mythical Slab increases evolution coherence by drawing psychic cards.

  • Gardevoir provides energy, helping you build Mew ex or Mewtwo ex faster. (Ralts and Kirlia form his Evolution lineup.)

  • Mewtwo ex is your main DPS. Build him up on the bench and start attacking once he's ready.

How to play Mew ex effectively

Here are some notes:

1. Prioritize flexibility while playing Mew ex.

Be prepared to change Mew ex often. If he's on the board early, he can accumulate damage while you build up your main damage dealer. But this phase is critical; If you don't draw the right cards, you may have to rely on Mew ex's damage instead of using it as a placeholder. Stay flexible and responsive with your strategy.

2. Don't give in to the enemy's conditioned attacks.

If a former enemy Pokemon's attack has a condition, make sure you meet its requirements before copying it with Mew ex. For example, Pikachu ex's attack adds “+30 damage for each of your Benched Lightning-type Pokemon.” If you copy it with Mew ex, it won't work unless you have Lightning-type Pokemon on your bench.

3. Use Mew ex as a tank tech card rather than a DPS.

Building a deck around Mew ex's damage output won't yield consistent results. Instead, use Mew ex as a flexible and durable tech card that can take down high-damage enemy cards in key situations. Sometimes it is enough to play with it to absorb damage with its 130 HP.

How to counter Mew ex

A key visual from the Pokemon TCG Pocket showing Pikachu ex and Gardevoir.

Right now, playing Pokemon with conditional moves is the best way to counter the effect of Mew ex. Take Pikachu ex, for example. Pikachu ex's move, Circular Circuit, deals good damage only if you have Lightning Pokemon on the bench. So, copying it with Mew ex will prove essentially useless because most Mew ex decks use Psychic-type decks, not Thunderbolt.

Another strategy against Mew ex is to give it a tank card with minimal damage. Since Mew ex can only copy your active Pokemon's attack, you can have a placeholder here so that Mew ex has nothing to copy.

Nidoqueen is another conditional attacker that won't bring much benefit to Mew. Its full potential is only realized if you have multiple Nidokings on the bench.

Mew ex deck review

Mew variants in the Pokemon TCG Pocket Mythical Island expansion.

Mew ex is constantly making his mark Pokemon Pocketit's META. Expect to see more decks built around its mirrored archetype in competitive play. While building a deck centered around Mew ex might not be ideal, adding it to established Psychic-type decks can provide a significant boost.

So, is Mew ex worth experimenting with? Absolutely. You will need this card, or at least be prepared, if you intend to compete Pokemon Pocket.
