Mauritanians go to the polls as Ghazouani seeks re-election

NAWAKCHOTT: Mauritanians will go to the polls on Saturday in a presidential election pitting incumbent Mohamed Ould Ghazouani against six rivals in the West African desert country that will soon become a gas producer. Ghazouani, a 67-year-old former soldier, has vowed to accelerate investment to spur a resources boom in the country of 5 million people, many of whom live in poverty despite wealth in fossil fuels and minerals. Ghazouani, elected to his first term in 2019, is widely expected to win Saturday’s election due to the dominance of the ruling party.
