Rivals of wonderSeason 1 gave players even more content to enjoy, expanding the roster of heroes, map, and game modes before it even had time to get stale. The Midtown map offers players a HERBIE-themed loadout to battle through, while a free-for-all experience was provided through the Doom Match arcade mode, which takes place in Doctor Strange's Sanctum Sanctorum. A Darkhold-themed battle pass offers cosmetics to aspire to, with players having more Rivals of wonder skins to chase as they absorb the story surrounding NetEase's version of Dracula. The main attraction of the season is the Fantastic Four, with Mr. Fantastic and The Invisible Woman playable now and The Thing and The Human Torch on the way.
Fans wasted no time making themselves known Rivals of wonder' Reed Richards and Sue Storm, bouncing off enemies with the former and using the latter to make allies invisible or enhance Doctor Strange's devious portal strategies. However, while these two characters are a great addition to the Duelist and Strategist categories, they also come with special skins that players can purchase. These outfits, Maker and Malice, highlight two evil alter egos of the heroes. Unfortunately, even though characters look the part with these skins equipped, they don't act it, something future “evil” outfits should strive to change.

The buffs and nerfs of Marvel Rivals Season 1 set expectations that NetEase will continue to meet
Marvel Rivals made some character changes with a Season 1 balance patch, but buffs and nerfs may be a tough act to follow in the future.
Marvel Rivals creator and Malice skins could be even better with unique dialogue
While Rivals of wonderGalacta might get on some fans' nerves, and not everyone agrees with the game's portrayal of characters like Moon Knight, most of the dialogue delivered by the heroes is fun and interesting. The pre-game conversations are especially worth a listen, as they reveal the lore of NetEase's character releases and detail currently unexplored parts of the game. Rivals of wonder universe. Whether players are learning of Krakoa's existence, witnessing the union of Spider-Man and Venom, or discovering the respect shared between Loki and Magneto, there's a lot to learn before the fight begins.
Although Marvel's First Family dialogues with each other and the game's other heroes, there are no additional conversations once Reed dons his Ultimate universe appearance or Sue gives in to the negative side of her personality. This is a real shame, as it would have been great to hear the Creator strike fear into the hearts of characters like the normally stolid Loki, or the normally kind Sue, leave a sweet character like Peni or Luna terrified. Currently, there's a bit of a disconnect between how the characters look when they wear these skins and how they sound, as Reed seems too nerdy despite being a supervillain and Sue doesn't seem fazed in the slightest. Beyond the pre-game dialogue, some new voice lines when taking out the cruelest or creepiest enemies could also elevate these skins.
Rivals of wonderMaker and Malice's outfits come with special MVP intros and emotes to further enhance the look, but the lack of new dialogue still hurts immersion.
Maker and Malice from Marvel Rivals aren't the only skins that could benefit from special dialogue
Rivals of wonder already has some other evil aspects that would benefit from special dialogue, such as All-Butcher Loki getting Symbiote-themed lines or Superior Iron Man boasting a more haughty tone. Potential post-launch skins that could really shine with distinct lines include:
-
Hydra Captain America
-
Red Hulk
-
Danny Rand iron fist
-
Yelena Belova Black Widow
-
Superior Spider-Man and Symbiote
-
The father of all Thor
-
Daken Wolverine
Skins inspired by a different iteration of the same character, or a twisted version of a beloved hero, would be even more special if the talented actors behind them were allowed to show off their range and take them in new directions. With Rivals of wonder“main competitor Surveillance occasionally adding unique lines to match certain skins, like Vengeance Mercy, it would be great to see NetEase's game follow suit with similar outfits. A special pre-game dialogue where certain characters react to their ally's cosmetic change (and its potential story implications) would be the icing on the cake, making outfits like Maker and Malice truly wonderful.
