According to Game Director Aaron Keller's December Director's Take, Surveillance 2 is set to undergo some significant changes. For fans wondering what to expect Surveillance 2 in 2025, it was confirmed that the Season 15 competitive landscape will feature “a bit of an upheaval as [Team 4] done in early 2024.” While more concrete details have yet to be shared, fans hope that Blizzard continues to expand on the game's lore moving forward.
Unfortunately, the narrative experience in Surveillance 2 has taken a backseat since Blizzard decided to abandon the PvE missions introduced in season six. While comics and short stories are available, in-game storytelling remains limited. As such, if Blizzard were to take a page from Rivals of wonder' to storytelling, it could be a great way to engage story fans while enriching the game universe.

Marvel Rivals invests in its story
Marvel Rivals offers compelling hero stories
Rivals of wonder benefits from being part of a major IP, which allows the game to draw from a deep well of characters from the Marvel multiverse. It's clear why the developers chose to expand these narratives through WONDERFUL RIVALS comic book series, seasonal events, and individual hero stories.
To access individual hero stories, go to the “Lore” tab of a “Hero Profile”. Players will find a summary of their character's background and motivations here, with three unlockable hero stories on the right. It's unclear whether NetEase Games will add new hero stories after all three are unlocked, but it seems likely considering the pace of Rivals of wonder' story so far.
Each hero's story varies in length and detail, but serves well to expand the game's narrative about Doctor Doom's experimentation with the timeline. For example, Mantis' tale details her daring escape from the Collector, during which she also frees Psylocke and Jeff the Land Shark. Loki's story details his plans in the chaos of the Timestream Entanglement, where he experiments with the sap of Yggdrasil and forms an alliance with Hela to claim the throne of Asgard for himself.
Overwatch 2 is expected to introduce its own version of hero stories
With narration by Surveillance 2PvE missions aside, Blizzard still has other ways to keep the story alive. While the game contains a Quest Codex, it is far from a complete story. Passionate about traditions Surveillance 2 they were eager to see the second half of the missions which, based on information from BlizzCon 2019, would include Suravasa as a story location. Considering that many wanted to see Overwatch members reunite or meet for the first time, along with Ramattra's motivations regarding Null Sector, the hero stories have great potential to take advantage of this.
In 2024, Blizzard's mass layoffs claimed the positions of Lead Narrative Designer Gavin Jurgens-Fyhrie and many other employees. Despite this, Jurgens-Fyhrie revealed in a now-deleted post on X (formerly Twitter) that the story was at least partially over. The post read, “I love the story we came up with for this, and I hope it gets told one day.”
It appears that Gavin Jurgens-Fyhrie's entire X account was deleted, not the individual post.
Even if you like books Overwatch: Declassified: An Official History they contain clues as to how the game's story would progress, they don't have the accessibility of integrating the heroes' stories directly into the game. Implementation of unlockable stories in the game, such as Rivals of wonderit would require less effort and appeal to fans of the characters. Additionally, this approach would undoubtedly create opportunities to further expand the story.
