Reclusive former movie star Kim Basinger has been spotted out running errands in a rare public appearance, more than a year after opening up about her battle with agoraphobia.
The 69-year-old Oscar-winning actress – who starred in numerous TV shows and films throughout her career – was dressed casually in a tracksuit, black jacket and over-size straw hat while shopping in Los Angeles on Friday.
Initially a TV actress, Basinger shot to fame after appearing alongside Sean Connery as Bond girl Domino Petachi in 1983’s Never Say Never Again.
Throughout her career, the actress has attracted plenty of acclaim for her work, receiving a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and numerous accolades, including an Oscar for her role in 1997 film L.A. Confidential.
In 2022, the LA Times Magazine ranked her third on its list of the “50 Most Beautiful Women In Film.”
However, over the past 20 years, Basinger has significantly retreated from the public eye, attending only a handful of public events and shying away from media appearances.
In 2022, Basinger sat down for her first interview in 14 years and discussed her struggles with severe anxiety, which kept her from leaving the house.
Appearing on Red Table Talk alongside daughter Ireland Baldwin, whom she shares with ex-husband Alec Baldwin, Basinger detailed her agoraphobia, a condition which causes “excessive fear of certain situations” and can lead to people “resisting” venturing outside.
Basinger told host Jada Pinkett Smith that one specific incident in a health food store in California had marked the beginning of her anxiety issues.
“My basket was almost full, and I found something really overcoming me in such a way that I couldn’t breathe,” she said.
“So I left the basket, and I made it to my car, and that was the last time I drove for almost six, seven months.”
The L.A. Confidential star went on to explain that she then “wouldn’t leave the house” and couldn’t even tolerate hosting guests within her own home as “everything” made her nervous.
“It’s like something shuts down in you and you have to relearn everything,” she said. “I had to relearn to drive.”
During the episode last April, Basinger also opened up about her “challenging” ex-husband, Baldwin.
“You know we’re all fine, we all get along, whatever. But he’s a challenge. We’ve had our challenges,” Basinger shared during a conversation about her daughter’s own battles with mental health.
“I don’t think Alec was emotionally or mentally available for that kind of talk. Alec, you know, operates in a very different way in his life.”
Basinger and Baldwin married in 1992, welcomed Ireland in 1995 and later became embroiled in an acrimonious custody battle following their 2002 split.
