Ys X: Nordics allows you to sail the high seas in your ship as you engage in naval battles, defeat the undead, and explore the islands in the Gulf of Obelia. However, you are given the Sandra, a ship that can barely sail and serves better as a monument than a seagoing vessel.

But, fortunately, the game allows you to upgrade and refit the ship to enhance its capabilities as you progress through the story, allowing you to make it a worthy companion on your journey across the Gulf of Obelia. While the upgrades may seem minimal at first, you'll quickly notice that even the smallest upgrade can drastically improve your ship.
How to upgrade and refit your ship
To make changes to your ship, you will have to go to a shipwright. The first shipwright you meet is Ulvar on the island of Balta. During your first meeting, Ulvar will make some necessary changes to Sandras, so that you can do so safely complete the rite of the Brotherhood of the Shield.
However, once you're done, you can return to Ulvar. Now you will be able to do it upgrade and improve your ship for one priceand you can also dress up your ship with ornaments if you have the Sandras Pack DLC. For now, Ulvar will be the only shipwright you will have access to until you progress further in the story.
After you rescue Cruz on Termina Island, he will join your crew. Once you get to chapter 4, Cruz will be available on Sandras as a shipwright. After that, you can access ship upgrades and renovations from anywhere on the open sea heading towards the common room table under the bridge.
How to unlock more upgrades
As you progress through the story, you will automatically unlock different upgrades for your ship. However, the best way to unlock further upgrades is to find the villagers of Carnac.
Whenever you save an inhabitant of the village of Carnacyou will get a corresponding upgrade in the Upgrade/Tuning menu of the Shipwright's Shop. The boosts you receive for saving these villagers also reflect their role in the crew. Please note that upgrading your ship requires gold, along with other materials.
The most common material to upgrade your ship is the Basic artisanal stockso make sure you have a supply of them whenever you want to upgrade your ship. In addition to the Basic Craft Stock item, some upgrades will require additional materials such as Celadon Clay or Aged Wood.
One of the best ways to collect these items is to take part in naval battles and collect items scattered across the open sea.
Some blueprints and upgrades can only be unlocked after completing a certain part of the story or can be purchased from merchant ships. These blueprints could unlock a new type of ammo upgrade, which can be purchased repeatedly to increase its capacity.
However, you just need to make sure of yourself purchase capacity upgrades based on your needs. If you purchase too many capacity upgrades, you will no longer have resources for other, more useful upgrades early on.
There is a small priority icon next to the update request. Updates with higher priority provides more bonuses than lower priority ones, but they also require more materials to unlock.
How to manage the ship's cargo
There are a total of six options in the ship's equipment. First place is for the normal artillery. You can get different types of ammo for this slot by purchasing upgrades, but you can only choose one at a time.
The default Normal Artillery ammo allows you to deal a moderate amount of ship damage and burst damage, while Smasher Shot ammo allows you to deal high burst damage, but moderate ship damage.
The second slot in the equipment allows you to choose the ammunition for the heavy attack, where default ammo is best in most cases, and the rest of the four slots in the equipment are intended for special ammunition. Please note that special ammo is limited, but capacity can be increased by purchasing upgrades from Shipwright's Upgrade/Repair menu.
If you scroll down on the Loadout tab, you'll notice the ornaments sectionwhere you can dress up your ship using all the cosmetic upgrades you received from the Sandras DLC pack. Once you have your gear ready, you can head out to sea to conquer any stray undead ships or retake any islands under Griegr's influence.
