Mario and Luigi: Brotherhood has dozens of islands to explore and reconnect as you progress through the main story. While none of the islands are huge, there are some collectibles and bonus things to do outside of the main story that can easily be missed the first time.

Even when you're on an island for the first time, you might want to travel back to a nearby town to buy new gear or just simply heal yourself, and all of this is made much easier thanks to fast travel. The iconic pipes make their return Mario and Luigi: Brotherhoodand here's how they work.

As the first new story in the series since the closure of its original developer, AlphaDream, Brothership carries the burden of rekindling the magic that made the previous Mario & Luigi games so beloved.

How to fast travel in Mario & Luigi: Brothership

Fast travel is through green and blue tubes, with green pipes leading from one place to another within an islandAND blue tubes leading to and from other islands. Blue pipes are found near the start of the spawn point on an island and Shipshape Island, and blue pipes can only take you to other starting areas on other islands. Green Pipes have set locations they lead to, which are usually just further inland from the island you're already on. Initially the green pipes are found in a block that you need to jump into to unlock that location as a fast travel point.

Having Mario jump on top of a green pipe and interact with it will do this take you to the predetermined location on that island as you interact with a blue pipe a map will open with all the available islands you can return to.

There's no way to fast travel to another island from a green tube or anywhere else when you're deep into an island, meaning you'll have to go back to the start of the island to leave, but the green tubes they make traveling easier. When you first travel to an island, there is no way to fast travel off that island until it is reconnected. While you will be able to discover green pipes within that island for fast travel, you will be stuck until you are able to finish that island's story.

While you can try to complete all the content on an island on your first trip, more content will open up after you leave, giving you even more reasons to come back whenever you can.

Look for Sprite bulbs
Connect an island opens new paths on the island to reach new locations.
Coming back with new tools allows you to overcome previous obstacles.
Side missions almost always require returning to previous islands.

In addition to these options, going back and leveling up before venturing to a new island is always a good idea as you never want to get stuck on an island that is too difficult for your current level.
