You’ll grow to love the clunky piece of machinery that overheats and runs out of power more than you expect. Before you become outpost and extractor savvy later in-game, you’ll need to get acquainted with your handy cutter. Whenever you explore a planet, have it ready to go so you can collect new resources every step of the way.

What Is A Cutter?

Cutter in Starfield

A cutter can be found early in-game as part of your work with Argos. You’ll have to pick up a cutter and begin working. In this mini-tutorial, you’ll learn how to mine different materials from the mines and planets you’ll explore throughout the game.

The cutter can also be used as a weapon, though not a very good one. In a pinch, it works like any other laser would. It won’t ever run out of ammo, so it’s a good idea to keep one on hand for emergencies.

It runs on energy instead, so once you reach zero, you’ll need to wait a few seconds for it to charge back up. It’s not often noticeable when running between mineral deposits.

Where To Find A New Cutter

Since space is limited in your ship and inventory, it’s possible you sold it the first chance you got or dropped it for more valuable loot.

If you misplaced or sold your cutter before you realized your love (or need) for resources, you can always buy another one.

If you’re carrying too much, you can always offload extra equipment like the cutter onto your follower.

This way, you don’t have to worry about losing it and needing another one.

Head over to the Cheyenne system and land in Akila City. Once you leave the spaceport, turn left to reach Shepherd’s General Store.

You can buy a brand-new cutter to resume your progress and exploration. It’ll cost you a few hundred credits, but that’s nothing compared to the wealth of resources you can collect later with it.

Where To Find Heller’s Cutter

If you’re short on credits or prefer finding things for free, you can head back to the Argos Extractors Mining Outpost on Vectera in the Narion system.

From the landing pad, go to the airlock on the right. Flip the switch to open the door and head inside. Follow the hallway to the right and stop right past the first doorway. Heller’s cutter will be sitting in a container just waiting for you to collect it.

While Heller’s cutter won’t mine any faster than the standard model, it does do +20% damage against robots.
