How to fish in NieR: Automata

Fishing can be done at any time stand in any body of water, even if it is only ankle deep like the water outside the Resistance Camp. When you stand completely still in the water, the button to start fishing will appear above your character's head and holding it down will make them sit up and be able to throw the fishing pod. Fishing is done with just one button, to launch the pod and reel it in:

Once your pod is cast into the water, it will sit and wait until something starts nibbling at the bait. You may see the capsule move up and down, but don't wind it back up yet. You are waiting for the pod to be pulled completely underwater and make an audible sound before quickly pressing the Real In button. You'll only have about a second to react, otherwise the fish will escape and you'll have to recast. You can cast and recast as many times as you like without restrictions, so fish to your heart's content to get as many fish or junk items as you want.

You can get a plug-in chip that makes a fishing icon appear in the top right corner of the screen whenever you're in a fishing-friendly body of water.
