Moriyama Shiemi has come a long way from the shy and nervous girl she was at the beginning of the series. Shiemi has always had the characteristics of a powerful woman; however, her lack of self-confidence was the chain that bound her abilities.

However, after meeting the Okumura twins and her other friends at Cram School, Shiemi had changed considerably, as she no longer doubted herself. But how much has Shiemi changed since the first season of The blue exorcist?

What was Shiemi like in season 1?

Moriyama Shiemi was initially a shy and somewhat skittish girl The blue exorcist season 1. When she was first introduced to Shiemi in chapter 3, she was a quiet girl who took care of the garden at the Exorcist Shop and was tired of demons. However, although Shiemi turned away from the demons out of fear, she was also shown immense intelligence and quickly overcame her initial fear.

For much of her life, Shiemi spent most of her time at the Exorcist Shop and tending the garden alongside her grandmother, whom she adored. However, because of this, Shiemi was often confined to her home and unable to make friends. Without the ability to develop social skills at a young age, Shiemi was unable to make friends, thus unaware of the nuances of interpersonal relationships.

Shiemi was also sick at the beginning of the first season. Since Shiemi was young, her body hasn't been up to the task of attending school; furthermore, Shiemi was hit by a Mashou and developed roots on her legs which prevented her from walking. Since she cannot leave her home, it is likely that Shiemi has often sought friendships with like-minded people. Unfortunately, Shiemi's faltering heart brought a demon to the garden of the exorcist's shop, and because Shiemi had communicated with it, the demon had come out of her heart.

This indicates Shiemi's loneliness after her grandmother's death and her lack of friendships outside of her mother. In later chapters, Shiemi also confesses that if she hadn't met Yukio and Rin, she would still be afraid of everyone and afraid to go out. However, after being saved by Rin, Shiemi took the first step towards gaining self-confidence.

The roots that linked Shiemi to the Exorcist Shop could also be seen in a figurative sense. Shiemi's doubts caused her heart to falter, allowing a demon to enter, rooting her in the garden. However, after removing the roots, Shiemi was able to free herself from these doubts, as she was no longer chained to the person she was. So, with the help of the twins, Shiemi was no longer tied to her past, physically and mentally.

Unbeknownst to Shiemi, she has always had confidence in herself. However, due to her lack of socialization and friendships, Shiemi always thought little of herself and therefore was unable to take the first step. However, the Okumura twins managed to bring her out of her shell.

Although Shiemi lacked confidence, she was always aware of her weaknesses and abilities. Thanks to the Okumura twins, Shiemi was able to attend Cram School as an Exwire, slowly learning more about the world around her and her latent abilities. Although she lacks confidence, Shiemi is able to push herself and make the changes necessary to rejoin society.

Shiemi's progression throughout the series

Shiemi has the qualities of a strong and independent woman; However, she must first gain confidence in herself

Shiemi has made impressive changes throughout the series. Even though Shiemi thinks she lacks confidence and, in chapter 4, believes she doesn't belong in the Cram School, Shiemi is already making the appropriate moves to boost her confidence. Although Shiemi was making the appropriate films, unfortunately, she had a rocky start asking Kamiki Izumo to be her friend, as Izumo had her own internal demons that she had been battling.

Although Shiemi had many obstacles, she never gave up on having someone become her friend and improve herself. Another unfortunate obstacle for Shiemi was her inability to tell if someone was being sarcastic and therefore making fun of her. While Shiemi may be a bit airheaded, she has always had good intentions when it comes to helping her friends.

Shiemi's progress as an Exwire at Cram School and her personality will change drastically when the series reaches its third season in The blue exorcist. Shiemi's modified personality will shine more during Shimane's Illuminati arc. Although it hadn't been long since Shiemi enrolled in the Cram School, Shiemi's confidence in herself and her abilities soon turned her into a reliable ally.

Although Shiemi had not gained self-confidence, her ability to overcome difficult times and never turn against her friends had been admirable. Unbeknownst to Shiemi, her hard work and willingness to help her friends have made her well-liked by the students at Cram School. However, she still thinks little of herself. Her reluctance to give up her friends allowed her to break down the wall Izumo had built after separating from her younger sister and mother.

Shiemi has changed for the better since her first introduction in Season 1. Although Shiemi has gained more self-confidence since Season 3, she still has a lot to do when it comes to her abilities and her legacy. As previously mentioned, Shiemi has always considered herself weak. However, with the help of the Okumura twins, she was able to break out of her shell, make friends, and unleash her true potential as an exorcist. Shiemi has always had the ability to stand on her own two feet. However, all she needed was a push in the right direction and support from her friends to better herself.
