Key points

  • Monkey D. Dragon likely possesses the last Poneglyph, which marks a major mystery in One Piece.

  • There is a theory that Dragon may be the son of the legendary Rocks D. Xebec, which has given rise to speculation about his parentage.

The author of A pieceEiichiro Oda is a master of mystery, suspense, and big twists that change the foundations of everything fans thought they knew. Because of this type of storytelling, there are many characters he has introduced into the story that later turn out to be much more important than they first seemed. While fans don’t know much about him, Monkey D. Dragon is almost certainly a good fit for this one as well.

As the leader of the revolutionary army, Dragon is already one of the most important characters of all A pieceas he represents a huge organization that acts as the polar opposite of the World Government. However, there are other potential revelations about him that, if true, could give him an even more pivotal role in the story, so let's take a look at what they might be!

The man marked by flames

The dragon may have the last Poneglyph

Poneglyph dragon monkey one piece

The Man Marked by Flames is one of the greatest and most important mysteries in history. A piece that remains unsolved. This mysterious character is someone who is in possession of, or at least knows the location of, the final Road Poneglyph, and there are currently no better known characters to fit the role than Monkey D. Dragon himself!

Although nothing has been said about it, it is quite clear that the Flame-Marked Man must be an incredibly important character in the world, something that Dragon certainly is, as he is the leader of one of the World Government's greatest enemies. Many people think that the identity of this mysterious individual is actually Scopper Gaban of the Roger Pirates, as he knew the location of this Poneglyph on Fish-Man Island and is quite an important character otherwise as well.

However, due to all the other information known about the Flame Marked Man, Dragon is a better fit. First, Dragon's reach is extensive, as he has agents and supporters all over the known world, so it is very likely that he knows that the Poneglyph is located on Fish-Man Island. Furthermore, the Flame Marked Man is said to sail on a black ship with black sails and is surrounded by whirlpools that sink anyone who gets too close.

This aligns with Dragon's ship and perhaps his powers, which were teased in Loguetown as allowing him to control the wind. Also, his name, Dragon, obviously alludes to fire, so the connection to be made here is to flames themselves, as well as the mark on his left eye, implying that at some point, he too was “marked”!

The bearer of a divine fruit

The dragon may have the power to control the windMonkey d dragon saves luffy loguetown one piece 1102 spoilers

When the Straw Hats visited Loguetown, Dragon made his first appearance to stop Smoker from capturing Luffy. His presence also brought powerful storms that ended up saving Luffy from execution and provided him with a means of escape from the clutches of the Marines. Since then, fans have always wondered about Dragon's powers.

A pirate, huh? Not a bad idea.

In the Skypeia arc, a brief flashback revealed that the Shandorans believed in several gods: the Sun God, the Rain God, the Forest God, and the Earth God. Later, in Wano, it was confirmed that the Sun God, at least, did exist through the power granted to Luffy by his Mythical Zoan Devil Fruit, the Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika. Since this revelation, fans have theorized that Dragon also ate the Rain God's fruit that allows him to control the weather! Judging from the brief glimpses fans have gotten at his supposed powers, this may very well be the case.

The son of the rocks D. Xebec

The dragon may have a special lineage

Rocks D. Xebec Laughing

By far the most far-fetched theory of all, there is a slight possibility that Dragon is actually the son of the legendary Rocks D. Xebec! The reason some fans believe this is because Dragon looks nothing like his son Luffy or his father Garp, both of whom actually look very similar to each other and even have very similar scars around their left eyes. Dragon, on the other hand, does have a tattoo.

The reason some believe that he is Rocks' son is because they look very similar, at least in the few silhouettes of Rocks shown so far, with their sharp faces and long dark hair. Also, Garp has never directly confirmed that Dragon is his son, only that he is Luffy's father, which opens up the possibility that their relationship happened through Luffy's mother. Garp has only ever stated that Luffy is his son's son, never specifying whether he was Dragon or not.

Naughty Punk! You're my son's son, Luffy!

It's not even completely out of the question that Garp would have raised Rocks' son as his own. This is because he had already done so with Ace after Roger's death, when Roger had even told Garp through his prison cell that he knew Garp would do it. Perhaps the reason Roger said this was because his rival Marine had already done it before! This showed that despite being their enemy, Garp was still willing to raise a son whose father was an enemy of the Marines and the World Government!
