Key points
- Ghost of Yotei was revealed in PlayStation's latest State of Play and appears to have caused a wave of people checking out its predecessor, Ghost of Tsushima.
- Ghost of Tsushima player numbers apparently saw a 53% increase in the week following Yotei's reveal, which is higher than that of newly released games like The Plucky Squire.
- The boost is likely to be a mix of new and returning players, but it seems pretty clear that there's a big appetite for another entry in the Ghost series.
Ghost of Yotei was revealed last month, which prevented PlayStation's latest State of Play from becoming yet another snooze fest. In the game's trailer, we saw that it will be set several hundred years after Ghost of Tsushima, this time it will have a female protagonist, and Sucker Punch later explained exactly why the series is starting over again.
Despite the fact that Ghost of Yotei will have very little to do with Ghost of Tsushima, given that Jin Sakai is long dead and buried, people seem to be playing in droves ahead of the game's launch next year.
Ghost Of Yotei Reveal Causes Massive Ghost Of Tsushima Player Boost
According to TrueTrophies, which claims to track the weekly player count of every popular PS4 and PS5 game across platforms, Ghost of Tsushima saw a whopping 53% increase in players during the week following Ghost of Yotei's official reveal, when the game went from #35 in the rankings to #26. This is just 17.9% less than The Last of Us Part 1, recently released on PlayStation Plus Extra.
Unfortunately, we have no idea whether this huge increase is due to simply returning players or newcomers to the series. It's possible that the reveal of Ghost of Yotei prompted Ghost of Tsushima to fill the backlogs of several people who were planning to try the game at some point, or it could be that the announcement inspired people to give the game a replay. It is most likely a mixture of both.
However, this is a great sign that players are hungry for another entry in the Ghost series, and now all we have to do is wait for Sucker Punch to actually cancel the date. I imagine there are worse ways to spend the wait than reading Jin Sakai's story a second or third time.
