SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT

One of the most surprising things about Final Fantasy 7 Remake is how it managed to naturally include content and lore from the Compilation of Final Fantasy 7. That is to say, content from the wider universe of Final Fantasy 7 that was created after the original game, like Crisis Core and Dirge of Cerberus, which have both had numerous references in the original game and Yuffie’s expansion.

As great as it is seeing those two projects get referenced in Final Fantasy 7 Remake, the biggest project in Compilation of Final Fantasy 7 that most fans want to see adapted is Advent Children, the 2005 film that acts as an epilogue to the main game and shows Cloud fighting against a disease called Geostigma.

We’ve seen some references to Advent Children so far, like with the three Whispers resembling Sephiroth’s Remnants, but everyone is wondering whether the Remake trilogy will ever properly include Advent Children content. Well, it looks like we might have our first official confirmation that it’s happening, as Tetsuya Nomura has said in a recent interview with The Guardian that the Remake trilogy will “link up” to Advent Children.

During the interview, Nomura and Final Fantasy 7 Remake’s producer, Yoshinori Kitase, are seemingly asked about what story changes can be expected from Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth and the untitled third game in the series, although they remain “tight-lipped”. Although they don’t give away any information on what to expect, Nomura does confirm, “If you play right through to the end, it will link up [to Advent Children] so you don’t need to worry about that”.

It’s not clear from Nomura’s comments just how much of Advent Children is going to be adapted or referenced in the final game in the trilogy, but the two having a “knowing smile” hopefully means that it’s going to be quite substantial. Some fans have pointed out that the third game in the series might have a lot less to work with since the events after The Forgotten Capital (where Rebirth is confirmed to finish) are right near the end, but including Advent Children could balance this out.

It’s worth remembering, though, that we also currently have no idea how the story is actually going to go and who might make it out alive. It’d be very difficult to do Advent Children if, say, Cloud doesn’t make it out of Rebirth alive like a lot of fan theories are suggesting. We’ll have to wait and see for now, but it at least looks like something from the movie will be adapted into the third game in the trilogy.
