Every best quality blade we know in one piece

Meito, also known as Legendary Swords, Famous Blades, and similar aliases, are, as each name suggests, specially crafted blades of superior renown. Those skilled in the use of blades will be able to recognize them immediately, and they tend to command both high prices and superior wielders. Meito are assigned “grades” individually based on their strength and quality.

One Piece: 5 non-canonical characters that make no sense

While all non-canon characters technically “make no sense” in One Piece, these ones seem particularly contradictory to the main canon.

Great Grade Blades are the blades of the second highest grade, positioned only below the 12 Supreme Blades. Only 21 of these Meito exist. The five currently known to the public are from Wano Country, known for its superior craftsmen, and are currently in the possession of people with ties to the area. This list will document all currently known Great Grade Blades.

6 Wado Ichimonji

One of Zoro's blades

  • Current owner: Roronoa Zoro
  • Creator: Shimotsuki Kouzaburou

Wado Ichimonji is a katana possessed by Zoro since his efforts to become the world's strongest swordsman. It was previously wielded by his friend and training partner, Shimotsuki Kuina. Wado Ichimonji was made by his grandfather, Kouzaburou, who brought it with him from Wano. Settling in East Blue, he helped found the eponymous village of Shimotsuki. Kouzaburo's heirloom would later be used by both his son, Koushirou, and his granddaughter, Kuina.

Kuina and Zoro were Koushirou's best students, and as a result of this they developed a close friendship and rivalry. In a serious fight, Kuina used Wado Ichimonji and soundly defeated Zoro with it. However, she celebrated little, as Koushirou's sexist beliefs that women couldn't be so skilled with the sword worried her, especially as she was approaching puberty. Zoro assured her that skill and determination were the only things that truly mattered, and the two friends swore to each other that one of them would become the strongest swordsman in the world.

After his sudden death at the age of eleven, Zoro requested the sword, so that he could fulfill his promise to Kuina. Koushirou allowed it, and has remained with the swordsman ever since. In a way, it's technically still a Shimotsuki heirloom, as Zoro's paternal grandmother Furiko was also a Shimotsuki. Wado Ichimonji is noteworthy enough that Tashigi was offended that a mere pirate would claim ownership of it.

5 Ame no Habakiri

One of Oden's blades

One Piece Oden Enma Ame no Habakiri

  • Current owner: Kozuki Momonosuke (temporarily)
  • Creator: Kozuki Sukiyaki

Ame no Habakiri was one of Kozuki Oden's signature swords, used in his variation of the two-sword style. The blade has a celestial color scheme of white and gold. It shares its name with the legendary Japanese katana used by the Shinto god Susanoo to slay the eight-headed serpent Yamata No Orochi. This distinction is likely due to the fact that it was previously one of the few weapons capable of harming Kaido in his dragon form.

This sword was forged by Kozuki Sukiyaki, Oden's father, who is a master craftsman. After his son's death, Sukiyaki somehow managed to recover Ame no Habakiri. Although Sukiyaki wants Momonosuke to wield his family heirloom, he does not consider himself worthy of wielding his father's sword.

4 Enma

A demonic Meito

  • Current owner: Roronoa Zoro
  • Creator: Shimotsuki Kouzaburou

Enma was Oden's other signature sword, being a sort of demonic counterpart to the more celestial Ame no Habakiri, sporting a dark purple and red color scheme. Like Wado Ichimonji, it was previously created by Kouzaburou and is currently owned by his distant relative, Zoro. Kouzaburo in particular thought that Enma was superior even to Wado Ichimonji.

While inheriting Ame no Habakiri was supposed to be Momonosuke's birthright, Enma belonged to his younger sister, Hiyori. However, Hiyori exchanged the blade with Zoro in exchange for Shusui.

One Piece: Each Zoan Devil Fruit with multiple models

A look at the Zoan Devil Fruits, more specifically those with “patterns” and the various forms they take.

Like Ame no Habakiri, Enma was one of the two blades that scarred Kaido many years ago, causing the distinctive “x”-shaped scar seen on his chest. The blade can release the wielder's Arament Haki, thus gaining a feared reputation. Zoro's arm was emaciated until he could establish control with the blade, and would seemingly emaciate the entire body of a lesser swordsman. Zoro not only hurt Kaido once again with Enma, but also used him to defeat King, which is especially noteworthy considering he is of the resilient Lunarian species.

Sukiyaki claims that if Zoro can transform Enma into a permanent Black Blade, he could increase in rank, potentially becoming a Supreme Rank sword. An odd detail about Enma is that its size appears to change to accommodate the more normal-sized Zoro and larger Oden. This inconsistency is also shared with Ame no Habakiri, but is more notable with Enma, as he is specifically seen wielded by two swordsmen of different sizes and proportional to each of them.

3 Nidai Kitetsu

A cursed sword

Luffy holds Nidai Kitetsu

  • Current owner: Kozuki Sukiyaki
  • Creator: Kotetsu

Nidai Kitetsu is a supposedly cursed katana of the Kitetsu school, all said to bring horrible deaths to their owners. It was made by Kotetsu, an ancestor of the Kozuki clan. His descendant, Kozuki Sukiyaki, is the current owner of the blade. Sandai Kitetsu, one of the other Kitetsu Meito, is currently owned by Zoro, who discovered it in Lougetown and decided to test his luck against the blade. Notably, the Sandai Kitetsu is Zoro's only sword currently in use that is lower than the Great Rank, being simply a Rank Blade (the lowest rank of Meito, of which there are an indeterminate number).

The Kitetsu Meito seemed to lower in quality the more recently they were made. Nidai Kitetsu is lower grade than Shodai Kitetsu, a blade made before Kotetsu was created, but is higher grade than Sandai Kitetsu, which was made by Sukiyaki, who is still alive. Sukiyaki lent the blade to Luffy, whose handling of the weapon was heavily criticized by Zoro. Notably, Luffy throws the sword, rather than directly dueling with it. It later returned to Sukiyaki's possession, as it was rediscovered in Udon by Kikunojo.

2 Shusui

A black blade

  • Current owner: Amibigous, rests in Shimotsuki Ryuma's grave
  • Creator: Unknown

Shusui was the signature sword of Shimotsuki Ryuma, a legendary samurai known as the “Sword God” who was an ancestor of Roronoa Zoro, who bore a resemblance to his descendant. Ryuma notably transformed the sword into a black blade, permanently infused with Ryuma's Arament Haki, which significantly increased its durability. Ryuma was buried along with his sword, but it was confiscated along with his corpse when Gecko Moria ravaged the tomb.

It later emerged alongside its owner's reanimated body in Thriller Bark. Zoro dueled his zombie-like ancestor, who eventually gave the blade to Zoro himself. Zoro believed that his other blades would break if the duel continued. Zoro became particularly proficient in the blade once he was trained by Dracule Mihawk, himself the owner of Yoru, another Black Blade.

These devil fruits are hindered by those who use them more than any potential inconvenience they themselves might have.

Shusui has a particularly strong connection to the country of Wano. Zoro has had his weapon stolen repeatedly, or has otherwise been asked to return it by those in town. Onimaru stole the blade from Zoro and brought it back to Ryuma's grave. He is so highly regarded that Hiyori exchanged Enma, her own blade, which was previously her father's, with Zoro to secure Shusui's place in the country.

1 The other sixteen blades of excellent quality

Unclear at the moment

One piece empty throne, twenty swords

The status of these Meitos, as well as whether they will play a role in the story, remains to be seen. Unlike the five currently known Great Grade Blades, there is at least a possibility that the other Meito of this grade came from outside Wano Country. That said, these, along with all other details, are purely speculation at this time. What is notable is that there are a number of identified Meito of unclear grade, meaning there is a possibility that other existing Great Grade Blades may have been seen but are not currently identified as such.
