Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Wildlands was released in 2017 and Breakpoint debuted in 2019. While the first game received mixed reviews, the second was more panned by reviewers, currently holding an average of just 57 on OpenCritic. The move certainly marks a change for Ubisoft, which used to take several months, if not years, to release its games on Steam, instead preferring its first-party launcher. At the beginning of 2024, for example, Skulls and bones was released on Steam approximately six months after its original release. The imminent Assassin's Creed Shadowson the other hand, it will be available for sale on Valve's platform from day one.
Despite the recent closeness, Ubisoft's relationship with Steam still seems lukewarm in some respects. Last month, insider reports indicated that Ubisoft wanted Valve to limit the visibility of player counts on Steam. According to these rumors, Ubisoft didn't like how Steam player count data was used to indicate a game's success and wanted to paint a more favorable picture for investors.
In any case, huge changes are expected for Ubisoft in 2025. Gaming analysts such as Joost van Dreunen believe that Ubisoft could be heading towards “privatisation and dismantling in 2025”, with reports of partners recently calling for the company to go private. it's still unclear what will happen next year and how this might affect the release of Ubisoft games on Steam, although it seems that the company is closer than ever to major PC video games showcase.
