Key points
- Elon Musk has said he plans to use xAI to create an artificial intelligence gaming studio, arguing that too many studios are owned by “big companies.”
- Musk, who owns several large companies, said on Twitter today that he wants to use this AI-powered game studio to “make gaming great again.”
- It's unclear whether Musk is serious about this project, but if he is, then game developers concerned about the practice of generative AI will likely have reason to worry.
Elon Musk is a bit of a player, that's true. He often posts his unfiltered opinions on certain titles via his Twitter account, most infamously his horrible Elden Ring build, and he loves them so much that he allegedly threatened Cyberpunk 2077 developer CD Projekt Red with an antique gun during a of Grimes' recording sessions to try to get a cameo in the game.
Like it or not, he's a gamer through and through, but now it looks like the billionaire might be ready to get into game development as well. In a recent post on TwitterMusk said too many game studios are owned by “big companies” these days, and says he will create an AI game studio to “make games great again.”
Elon Musk is planning to create an AI gaming studio
More specifically, Musk says that xAI (his artificial intelligence company) will create the game studio, although it's really another question whether he's actually serious about these plans. A casual statement in a throwaway tweet isn't enough to confirm that these plans are actually in motion, although that wouldn't be all that surprising given the billionaire's love of the medium.
Elon Musk also owns several “large corporations.”
If Musk takes this game study seriously, then this will be a concern for many game developers out there who are already trying to push back against generative AI in video games. Whether generative AI for voice acting or art, its practice is widely hated by most of the gaming industry, with video game actors union SAG-AFTRA striking over the use of the intelligence artificial still in progress.
It's still early, though, and we haven't yet seen any significant announcements from Musk or xAI about this supposed gaming studio. Right now, it's just Musk's somewhat inane ramblings on Twitter, and we know from his proposed cage fight with Mark Zuckerberg that not everything he says ends up happening.
