Fans have also criticized recent changes to cells, items placed in armor slots to provide additional benefits. Following the Awakening update, cells can no longer be fused to increase their effectiveness, meaning they all now provide a +1 bonus. Some self-styled longtime players claim this change has been completely gutted Intrepid's build variety, doubly so since the new patch also prevents most perks from stacking. The problem is further exacerbated by the removal of some abilities, making it impossible to convert many old builds, let alone make them work effectively.
A number of fans have also criticized the return of the old battle pass system, which is filled with limited-time cosmetics that consequently act as FOMO-inducing gameplay incentives. Furthermore, Intrepid: awakening is criticized for the introduction of loot boxes, which are now offered as an alternative to grinding weapons. Between this addition and the fact that most weapon progression has been restored, some vociferous fans are labeling the new update as blatantly pay-to-win and extremely predatory.
