If you thought that Cyberpunk couldn’t possibly get any better than it did with the introduction of Phantom Liberty, then boy did CD Projekt Red have a big surprise for you last week. Update 2.1 originally sounded like it’d just be a small one with some minor tweaks, but it turned out to be a big fan-service package that finally added in a working Metro, the ability to hang out with your partner in your hideout, and a portable music player.

Cyberpunk 2077 Will Never Erase Its Own Troubled History

The ultimate edition is coming to PS5 and Xbox Series X/S in a new, heavily patched form.

CD Projekt Red wasn’t content to just add in a bunch of features that fans have been asking for ever since the game launched, however, as it also included a long-overdue nod to one of the most infamous Keanu Reeves easter eggs that I can’t believe wasn’t already in the game – Sad Keanu.

For those who don’t know, Sad Keanu is a meme from 2010 centred around a paparazzi shot of Keanu Reeves sitting on a bench surrounded by birds and eating a sandwich while looking incredibly sad. It’s a meme that’s been been going for two decades now and one that Reeves has even commented on in the past, but considering he plays Johnny Silverhand in Cyberpunk, it seemed like a slam-dunk to reference in the base game.

That didn’t end up happening but, as pointed out by Twitter user winky813, the missed opportunity has been done justice in the 2.1 update. Whenever you enter the newly implemented metro system, V will find themselves met with a variety of different animations, which usually focus on Night City residents chatting away.

As great as those encounters are, there’s one very special animation that has a chance of playing. If you’re lucky enough, you’ll see Johnny Silverhand sitting across from V with a sandwich in his hand and pigeons surrounding him as he looks sadly at the floor. Silverhand often looks a little forlorn considering he’s stuck in V’s head, but the sandwich and birds make it very clear that this is a reference to the Sad Keanu meme.

Sad Keanu is far from the only time that Cyberpunk 2077 stretches its knowledge of the internet, as a ton of the photo mode poses are just references to memes.
