Taylor Swift fans in Brazil have alleged they suffered “second-degree burns” during the star’s concert after metal flooring and fencing reached scalding temperatures.
Swift’s Eras Tour leg in Brazil has was struck by tragedy over the weekend when a fan lost her life shortly before the star took to the stage.
Numerous fans have since taken to social media to share that they were treated for “second-degree” and “third-degree” burns as a result of making contact with the stadium’s metal flooring and fencing.
One fan tweeted from hospital after the concert claiming the stadium had turned into a “hotplate”.
“Today, 11/18, I went to the Nilson Santos Stadium for the Taylor Swift concert and left with 3 second-degree burns,” she wrote. “The metal plates that covered the floor of the premium track turned into a HOTPLATE at 40°C.”
Another fan wrote: “This turned this whole place into an oven it’s so frightening,” while a third who also tweeted pictures of their burns said: “This was the worst experience of my life, I return to my state without seeing @taylorswift13 and full of bruises and burns! #TheErasTourRio #TheErasTour taylor nation.”
Swift was forced to postpone her second show, which eventually went ahead on Monday, after the extreme temperatures continued to ravage the country.
Posting on Instagram, Swift said: “The safety and wellbeing of my fans, fellow performers and crew has to and always will come first.”
Brazil is currently in the grips of an unprecedented heatwave.
Authorities warned of the danger to life as it recorded numbers on its heat index, which combines temperature and humidity, that reached 59.3C on Friday followed by 59.7C on Saturday.
In a statement on Instagram, Swift shared that she had been left “devastated” over the death of a fan.
“I can’t believe I’m writing these words, but it is with a shattered heart that I say we lost a fan earlier tonight before my show. I can’t even tell you how devastated I am by this,” Swift announced on social media.
“There’s very little information I have other than the fact that she was so incredibly beautiful and far too young.
“I’m not going to be able to speak about this from the stage because I feel overwhelmed by grief when I even try to talk about it. I want to say now I feel this loss deeply, and my broken heart goes out to her family and friends. This is the last thing I ever thought would happen when we decided to bring this tour to Brazil.”
Ana Clara Benevides Machado, 23, had sought help at the stadium after feeling unwell. She was transferred to hospital but tragically died one hour later.
