Actress Emily Blunt apologises for ‘fat-shaming’ waitress in resurfaced TV interview

Emily Blunt says she is appalled with herself for fat-shaming a waitress in a resurfaced TV interview.

The British actress said she was sorry for the way she spoke about her experience at an American restaurant when she appeared on the UK program, The Jonathan Ross Show, back in 2012.

In the resurfaced clip, Blunt, 40, recalled eating dinner at a local Chili’s restaurant while filming the action movie Looper in the US.

Host Jonathan Ross quipped: “If you go to Chili’s, you can see why so many of our American friends are enormous.”

“Well, the girl who was serving me was enormous,” Blunt responded before saying that the waitress recognised her during the visit.

“I think she got freebie meals at Chilis.”

Host Jonathan Ross added: “Nothing wrong with that.”

After the decade-old clip resurfaced on YouTube, the Oppenheimer star swiftly apologised for her remarks.

“I just need to address this head on as my jaw was on the floor watching this clip from 12-years ago,” she wrote in a statement to People magazine. “I’m appalled that I would say something so insensitive, hurtful, and unrelated to whatever story I was trying to tell on a talk show.”

“I’ve always considered myself someone who wouldn’t dream of upsetting anyone so whatever possessed me to say anything like this in that moment is unrecognisable to me or anything I stand for,” she added.

“And yet it happened, and I said it and I’m so sorry for any hurt caused. I was absolutely old enough to know better.”

However, her apology did little to stop the online backlash she received as a result of her previous comments.

“Emily Blunt being blatantly fatphobic wasn’t on my 2023 bingo card but here we are,” wrote a user on X, formerly Twitter.

“Ugh f**k Emily Blunt seriously was one of my fave actresses but turns out she’s a fatphobic unfunny mean girl who thinks it’s funny to point out the size of a server when it adds nothing to the story – for shame,” commented another.

Another wrote: “Emily Blunt being fatphobic is so disappointing, i guess another one bites the dust.”

But some came to her defence, pointing out that the interview occurred 13 years ago.

“This was old story. This happened back in 2012 where she did this interview. Y’all serious chill a bit,” one user wrote.

“Emily probably doesn’t remember that at all now and has grown so much since. Stop digging old dirt.”
