Close to the Sun

Guide Rose Archer through the Helios helicarrier as she attempts to find her sister in this Nikola Tesla-centric horror game.

Set in the late 19th century, and taking place on Nikola Teslas’s Helios helicarrier, journalist Rose Archer hops aboard in her quest to find her lost sister in this first Game Pass addition of 2024. This is more than just a rescue mission though as Rose quickly discovers not all is as it seems, the word quarantine painted in red on the wall the first indicator that finding her sibling will be even harder than she anticipated.

Hell Let Loose: January 4 On Series X|S, PC, And Cloud

Hell Let Loose

Hell Let Loose drops you in the midst of World War 2 to take part in epic 50 vs 50 battles. A tactical first-person shooter, it will take you to various theaters of war all across Europe.

Sure, you could drop into Warzone for your war-style PvP fix, leaving no room for any other games on your Series S in the process, or you could give Hell Let Loose a try instead. The first-person shooter is set during World War 2 and gives you a far more real-feeling experience, teaming you with 49 other soldiers as you take on a rival team of 50. Free on Game Pass from January 4.

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla: January 9 on Xbox Series X|S, PC, And Cloud

assassin's creed valhalla

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla continues the long and storied series of action-adventure games. As Eivor, a young Viking warrior, you must travel to the distant shores of England in search of fame, riches, and land to settle. Sticking with the RPG elements introduced in previous titles, you will lead raids, conquer settlements, and gradually spread your influence throughout the land.

If this isn’t the best Assassin’s Creed game so far, then it’s almost certainly the biggest. Easily capable of taking more than 100 hours of your time if you let it, Valhalla puts you in the boots of Eivor, traipsing through a Viking-era Europe battling foes and conquering as you go. Worth the price of a Game Pass subscription all by itself if you ask me.

Super Mega Baseball 4: January 11 On Consoles, PC, And Cloud

super mega baseball 4

Super Mega Baseball 4

Super Mega Baseball 4 continues the EA series with the strongest installment yet, filled with legends from the sports past for you to give a bat and throw a wicked curveball at.

Finally, a sports game, because for some people, that’s all they need from video games. EA might not make the Madden equivalent of baseball games, but its melding of sports sim with arcade-style fun via Super Mega Baseball is comfortably the next best thing. Packed with names from throughout baseball history all fans will instantly recognize, the fourth installment steps up to the Game Pass plate on January 11.

We Happy Few: January 11 On Consoles, PC, And Cloud

We Happy Few

We Happy Few

We Happy Few drops you in a ‘retrofuturist’ version of 1960s England, where the populace are dosed up on the drug Joy. You follow three characters as they navigate the city of Wellington Wells.

Xbox is very keen to drop Game Pass subscribers into different historical periods this month as next up is We Happy Few. Not the 1960s England your parents will remember (thankfully) as you team up with a group to safely make your way through the world while everyone is experiencing the effects of something called Joy. Joy the made-up drug, not the feeling, that would have made for a far less terrifying experience.

Resident Evil 2: January 16 On Consoles, Cloud, And PC

Resident Evil 2 (2019)

Bringing the Capcom classic up to modern standards, Resident Evil 2 is a survival horror game that adapts gameplay to bring it more in line with recent titles. As Leon S. Kennedy or Claire Redfield, you must survive long enough to take down the Tyrant and figure out what has gone wrong in Raccoon City.

Resident Evil 4’s remake was one of the best games of 2023, and now Game Pass subscribers have a chance to experience where exactly this remake train began. Resident Evil 2 was the first in the series to be remade using Capcom’s RE Engine, and while it might not be quite as good as 4, the studio is yet to miss with these remakes. Well worth a playthrough whether you tried it at launch or not.

Those Who Remain: January 16 On Consoles, PC, And Cloud

those who remain

Those Who Remain

Survive waves of infected enemies in this survival shooter and use the rewards you receive to upgrade your gear and face them all over again, and again, and again…

January 16 is shaping up to be the new Halloween if Xbox has anything to do with it. Not only will the Resident Evil 2 remake drop for Game Pass subscribers that day, but so will the lesser-known Those Who Remain. Battle your infected enemies in waves and use the rewards you receive to improve your weapons and face some more. Keep going as long as you can, if your mind and body can take it.
