Dying for someone else is incredibly heroic, but willingly blowing yourself up makes the act and the effect that much more grandiose and touching. In the short time that Pedro knew Luffy, he became incredibly loyal to him, and he showed that loyalty without much pain or regret. He willingly gave his life, a feat that some of Luffy's crew might not be able to accomplish.

After Crocodile's defeat, it was time for the pirate crew to leave Alabasta, and deciding whether or not to leave with Vivi became an important decision.
Although it was a difficult decision, Vivi ultimately decided to stay behind. In this way, she remained loyal to her country, shouldering the burden of the citizens who needed to rebuild, rather than living a free life as a pirate.
